Pvt. Timothy E. Duren, 19, of Tracy, graduated Aug. 6 at the United States Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, successfully completing 13 weeks of intensive training. During the marksmanship phase of his training, he was awarded the Expert Rifle Badge for superior shooting skill.
Duren graduated from Tracy High School in 2009 and is the son of Wayne and Julie Duren of Tracy.
He is stationed at Camp Pendleton to receive Marine combat training. Subsequently, Duren will be sent to USMC Combat Service Support School in Camp LeJeune, N.C., for training in supply administration and operations.
Tracy native earns kudos
Staff Sgt. Lorenzo Souza of Tracy was named Drill Sergeant of the Cycle last month. Souza entered the U.S. Army in 2003 and finished his basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C.
He served with the Army National Guard in California as a recruiting and retention assistant before going on active duty in 2004. He served a two-year tour in Iraq in 2004 and 2005, and from 2005 to 2007, he served as tour in Germany as a shop foreman. He has also served at Fort Bragg, N.C., as a squad leader with the 4th Psychological Operations Group. He was then assigned to Fort Sill, Okla., as a drill sergeant with Foxtrot Battery, 1st Battalion, 19th Field Artillery.
Souza’s other awards include the Army Achievement Medal, Mechanics’ Badge, Airborne Parachute Badge and Drill Sergeant Badge.
He is married and has two children.
