Drivers heading into Tracy late Friday evening found California Highway Patrol officers kicking off their Labor Day weekend traffic enforcement with a sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint on west 11th Street.

The six hour checkpoint ended early Saturday morning stopped east bound drivers on 11th Street near Crossroads Drive as officers looked for drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. They also checked drivers for a valid license.

According to CHP officer Juan Cruz the checkpoint had 517 vehicles checked with two drivers cited for no valid driver's license and two cars impounded. Officer evaluated three drivers for alcohol or drugs but no arrests were made.

How do we know the checkpoints are working? Maybe it’s the economy. Maybe no one can afford booze. Seriously CHP, you know saturation patrol would have been a more efficient use of resources, and less intrusive to the people. But saturation patrol wouldn’t have been as glamorous, or gotten the attention of the press, and that’s what you wanted. Law enforcement is fighting DUI with antiquated techniques at the expense of our freedom. This is NOT the 80’s.

Sounds pretty good. No arrests were mad(e) but 3 were evaluated. Just evaluated. Officers would not let them free if they should be arrested. Thank You drivers and officers. Keep up these checkpoints!
