Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton, is accepting applications for internships in his Stockton, Pleasanton and Washington, D.C., offices. The internships are designed for young men and women interested in civics and government who want hands-on experience in a congressional office.

College and postgraduate students are eligible in any of the three offices. High school students are considered on a case-by-case basis in the Stockton and Pleasanton offices only. All internship positions are unpaid.

To apply, mail or fax a cover letter and résumé to one of the congressman’s offices. Mail delivery to Washington, D.C., is delayed due to security, so faxing is encouraged.

Applications may be sent to the Staff Assistant, 2222 Grand Canal Blvd., No. 7, Stockton, CA 95207; or 5776 Stoneridge Mall, No. 175, Pleasanton, CA 94588. Alternately, applications may be faxed to 209-476-8587 in Stockton, 925-737-0734 in Pleasanton or 202-225-4060 in Washington.

McNerney’s offices can be reached by phone at 476-8552 in Stockton, 925-737-0727 in Pleasanton and 202-225-1947 in Washington.

My bad. I just couldn't resist a little political jab. You are both right. This is a wonderful opportunity, and anyone so inclined should apply. I am sure it will be a great experience no matter who the congressperson may be.

This is an outstanding opportunity. It'd be nice to see a lot of people apply. I served as an intern for the California State Senate in the mid to late 1980's. At that time, I worked on the staff of the Senate President Pro Tempore in one of the nonpartisan offices that served the Senate, as a whole. It was one of the best, most enriching experiences of my life. Internships offer a unique perspective on the political life and processes that make our republic work. You'll come away with an appreciation for the rich diversity of people and opinion, as well as a more concrete understanding of American governance. I urge you to apply for this fantastic opportunity.

Why is it some people turn everything into political commentary? Being a Congressional Intern was and still is a terrific educational opportunity (I was one back in the day in WI.), no matter who the Congressman is. How about ENCOURAGING students to apply for the position instead of dishing out negative political opinions?

Go ahead and apply, by the time you are hired you will be working for someone else, a Republican.
