Macy’s will begin interviews and training for employees at its soon-to-be-opened Tracy store beginning at the end of the month.

Starting Aug. 31, Macy’s will open an employment center in the West Valley Mall, where potential employees will interview with staff and begin training for their jobs.

Applications for the positions at the store, which is supposed to open in the middle of October, are available online at www.macysjobs.com.

According to Natalie Flynn, a Macy’s spokeswoman, people should apply at the website, and store officials will call the top applicants to visit the employment center for an interview.

Macy’s is also preparing for its opening by letting local nonprofits sell tickets to shop at an event called Shop for a Cause. Nonprofits that sell the tickets will get to keep $5 of each purchase price, and shoppers who pick up the passes will get to visit the new store early, Oct. 16, and be able to take advantage of several exclusive in-store offers.

Interested nonprofits should visit www.macys.com/shopforacause for details.

Macy's made the decision to locate in the West Valley Mall, taking the place of the former Gottschalks, after the city of Tracy chipped in $2.75 million to help the department chain revamp the space. General Growth Properties, the management company of West Valley Mall, contributed $4.2 million to bring in a Macy's.

Oh joy, low paying go nowhere service jobs. Is this the best our city leaders can do? If you are going to spend tax money bringing in businesses then how about bringing in biotech, medical device, or internet companies?

Well, a wise manager once told me the jobs created by a company are not the only jobs created by that company.

Macys will be a boon to the area around the West Valley Mall and the rest of Tracy, CA.
