Two Tracy girls on the Delta Valley Volleyball Club team from Lodi claimed first place in their age division in the USA National Volleyball Championships June 24 through 27 in Reno.

Twin sisters Gianna and Katrin Gotterba and Delta Valley Blue went 10-1 in the national championships. Their only loss in the tournament was to Mizuno Long Beach Rockstar in pool play. Delta Valley still emerged as the top seed, as both teams were 6-1 in their pool, but Delta Valley lost only three sets, while Mizuno lost five.

Delta Valley went on to win its challenge matches and go undefeated the rest of the way, with tough three-set matches all the way through the gold bracket. Delta Valley won a rematch against Mizuno in the final, 25-23, 13-25, 15-7.

Gianna and Katrin attended Ripon Christian School until this year and will play high school volleyball this fall season during their freshman year at St. Mary’s High School in Stockton.

The team began its season in November and went 32-0 in the Northern California Volleyball Association Power League. Delta Valley also won both the Pacific Northwest National Qualifier in Spokane, Wash., and the Far Westerns National Qualifier in Reno and took second in the Northeast National Qualifier in Baltimore and ninth in the AAU Junior Nationals in Orlando, Fla. Through it all, they achieved a 100-12 record for the year.

10U Titans head to Western World Series

The Tracy Titans 10U fastpitch softball team is heading to the National Softball Association Western World Series to finish a summer season where the girls have gone 24-11-1 through tournament play.

The team will play in a six-team bracket at the tournament, July 11 through 15, in Portland, Ore.

Among the team’s tournament wins this year was the United States Specialty Sports Association Last Chance Tournament, June 26 and 27, at Big League Dreams in Manteca.

The Titans went 6-0 in the eight-team tournament, including a 5-2 win over Lady Blast of Brentwood, making the Titans the USSSA’s No. 2-ranked B-level team in Northern California.

Other highlights for the year include two more tournament wins, two third-place finishes and a fourth-place finish.

Coach Junior Farfan said he expects the girls to exemplify teamwork, effort and attitude, and he attributes the team’s success to those principles.

“Every player has stepped up to their challenges all year, and they have succeeded, even in defeat,” he said.

The team has 12 players, including 11 who have come up through the Tracy Express recreational fastpitch league. Girls who return from the Titans 2009 10U team include Alysa Farfan, Macey Rio, Kelcy Telles and Morgan Wheeler. Lindsey Widner and Emily Yanke previously played on the Tracy Express 10U All Stars, and the team also includes Arielle Alipio, Heavyen Deneau, Chelsey Eddy, Karina Faasisila, Sydney Vernon and Payton West.

14U Titans take second at state tourney

Tracy Titans 14U finished in second place in the United States Specialty Sports Association State Championships 14U A division at Big League Dreams in Manteca last weekend, July 3 through 5.

The Titans were going for a repeat of last year’s USSSA Western National title, but they started with a disadvantage: A loss in the first game to the San Jose Sting sent the Titans to losers bracket. From there, they had to win six in a row to get into the championship game against the Bakersfield Rebels.

The Titans beat the Rebels 4-1 to force a second game in the double-elimination tournament, but they lost 2-0 on Monday in a game that went until midnight.

Julia Fernandez batted .578 for the tournament and scored 10 runs, Tayler Misfeldt batted .529 and scored seven runs, Justina Farfan hit .368 and scored five runs, and Taylor Honnoll batted .333.

Katie Hanville pitched for three wins and no losses, Fernandez was 3-2 for the tournament and Misfeldt was 1-0.

Baseball team claims third in USSSA play

Team Mizuno, a 16-and-under baseball team made up of Tracy, West and Kimball high school players, has attained the No. 5 ranking in Northern California in the United State Specialty Sports Association 16U Sophomore Elite class.

The team finished third in the Warrior Weekend Tournament on June 26 at CSU Stanislaus, and finished third again in the Stars and Stripes wood bat tournament at Twin Creeks Sports Complex in Sunnyvale.

This past weekend, the team went 3-1, with three wins in a row and an 8-6 loss in the semifinal to San Jose P.A.L. Grey, which went on to win the championship.

Players include Zack Abshire, Kris Bartlett, Blake Cichella, Zack Perugi and Cody Wagner of Kimball High; Kenny Bergmann, Tyler Cox, Devon Denholm, Chase Johnson, Matt Loscavio, Reilly Oki, Manuel Robles, Kyle Scornaienchi and C.J. Perez of Tracy High; and Victor Escoto of West High. Coaches are Mark Whelan, Kenny Serrano and Shaun Flannigan of Kimball High.
