San Joaquin County pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu reported that Sandra died between 4 and 6 p.m. the day she first went missing by “homicidal asphyxiation,” and was found with a cut on her lower inner lip, an abrasion on her left elbow and other injuries, according to a release issued by prosecutor Thomas Testa. Omalu also noted that Sandra was found with a torn cloth that had been “knotted into a ‘noose.’”
Testa's timeline points to Clover Road Baptist Church, just a few addresses to the west of Orchard Estates, as the likely scene of the murder. Huckaby’s grandfather was a pastor there, and Huckaby had also taught Sunday school at the house of worship.
According to prosecutors, by the time Sandra’s mother, Maria Chavez, called police to report Sandra missing at 7:53 p.m. March 27, 2009, the 8-year-old girl had already been killed and her body disposed of by Huckaby.
The documents released by Testa state that the last evidence Sandra was alive — captured in a surveillance video at 3:54 p.m. March 27, 2009 — came just eight minutes before Huckaby was seen driving her Kia sports-utility vehicle out of Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park, where both Huckaby and Sandra lived, and toward Clover Road Baptist Church.
The media release states that at about this time, Huckaby reported to mobile home park management that her Eddie Bauer suitcase had been stolen.
Eighty-five minutes after driving away from Orchard Estates, the release says, Huckaby was seen driving away from the vicinity of the church before she returned about 30 minutes later.
During that 30 minutes, the prosecutor’s report says, Huckaby was seen by a former U.S. Marine and his wife near an irrigation pond at Bacchetti and Whitehall roads north of Tracy. The report says Sandra’s body, which was stuffed inside a black Eddie Bauer suitcase, was pulled 10 days later from the same irrigation pond where the man and his wife reported seeing Huckaby.
According to the timeline, Sandra’s body had been dumped by 6 p.m. March 27 — no more than two hours after she first went missing.
On March 28, police received a handwritten note that read: “Cantu locked in stolin suitcase thrown in water onn Bacchetti Rd. & Whitehall Rd witness” (sic). Prosecutors say that the handwriting matched samples of Huckaby’s writing, even though the writing in the “witness” note was disguised.
When Clover Road Baptist Church was searched on April 6, 2009, police found a rolling pin with blood on it that contained Sandra’s DNA, according to Testa's report. Investigators also found that one of the church’s window blinds was missing a draw cord, and the cord that was used to tie shut the Eddie Bauer suitcase was later determined to be a match for the cords on the other church blinds.
Alprazolam, a form of the muscle relaxant anti-anxiety drug benzodiazepine, was found in Sandra’s body. Bottles of alprazolam were also found in Huckaby’s purse and home, the prosecutor's report stated.
Prosecutors had accused Huckaby of drugging a 7-year-old girl in January 2009 and a 37-year-old man in March 2009 with benzodiazepine, though those charges were dropped as part of Huckaby’s plea bargain.

The Orchard Estate Park is a very nice place to live, with many good people here. I made a good choice coming here. I paid cash for my place six years ago and many of my friends told me I made a mistake since I could afford a five bedroom mini mansion like they had, but the Jack Benny in me didn't want to be broke at the end of every month with no room for error. My property tax was only three hundred and something, and now these same friends who told me I made a mistake now think I'm Nostradamus since many of them have lost their homes.
I've heard many trailer park jokes, and they bother me one bit, I find many of them funny. I just like to tell people contrary to popular belief not all of us are toothless and married to our first cousins.
Is good to hear from folks who live there. I always had a good feeling about that mobile home park - seems more like a low cost "gated community" than stereotype "trailer park". I've been through Tracy a few times - liked it - and know some who moved there and commute to Santa Clara. I'm in Missouri now.
"Police repeatedly searched the area of the ponds, including on the night Huckaby reported the note, according to the grand jury transcripts. Tracy police Detective Timothy Bauer said they could not send in divers because the pond was filled with manure and other waste. Cadaver dogs were ineffective due to the stench and methane gas, Bauer said." The suitcase would have floated after decomposition produced gases.
TracyGirl - there are a lot of suppositions in your post about family members not knowing whatever, but reports said MH was at her grandparents as a "last hope" that they could help her (other version said she was there to help him). There were a lot of denials, not facing facts, etc from the Lawless side about many things (esp when MH's mother tried to get custody of Madison) but the truth seemed to come out every time. True, maybe the grandparents didn't know about what may have set her off, but I feel someone would know - MH was not quiet about things that bothered her. And I still say the AVERAGE 12 yo child is not suicidal (and if discussing it at age 12, it would likely have been building up before that) - there are other issues that show up at that age (obesity, bullying/but no talk of that with MH), but suicidal thoughts don't usually come up until a few years later (teenagers).
For going further with the MH druggings... I'm saying if MH had been prosecuted for drugging Polk and Plowman (which IS a crime), word may have gotten out in the Park so parents wouldn't let their kids go to - all they had to do was look in MH's purse and they'd have found Xanax.
Suicidal ideation ( a symptom of depression) in children is more common than society is aware of, that is why San Joaquin County Children’s mental Health Services exist. Religion, age, creed, gender or sexual orientation, culture, economic status, familial status, sexual orientation does not protect you from depression, suicidal or homicidal ideation or mental illness period.
If Maria Chavez and those in the neighborhood knew that MH had drugged the other girl in February, why was Sandra not protected and prohibited from going to hang out with Madison/MH?
Does your family know everything about you? The fact that MH family knew she had a mental illness doesn’t constitute that the grandparents knew she experienced some childhood trauma. I know several people who were molested as children and have yet to disclose it to family. They fear being ostracized and not believed so they remain silent with their own pain.
As to the Tracy Police Department knowing MH had drugged another little and not keeping her from being around children. The TPD does not have authority to stop her from being around children, it’s not their job and by law MH had to be prosecuted in court to become legally removed from being with children. TPD cannot say “hey we know you drugged this little girl, thus stay away from children” or “hey we know you stole from X Store so stay out of all the grocery stores”. Its not that easy, it’s a process!!!
Innocent til proven guilty by a court of law.. Then the law can decide if MH will be required to register as a sex offender cause she drugged a little girl
its about process and policy and procedure. Every task or duty has a process. You want to buy a house, its a process. Not to sound harsh but to make a point, the delay in searching for the Sandra in the suitcase in the ditch( or lagoon or whatever you call the location where Sandra was found) would not had made a difference, she was already dead. MH killed her almost instantly.
TPD kicked ass, all evidence was found to most certainly earn her the death penalty, had it gone through the trial process.
Cantu family? who are you referring to? the paternal side of the family (Danny Cantu) and the paternal grandparents, like the one who was shown on Tv, who spoke at sentencing (connie Cantu)? or Maria Chavez, Angie Chavez or the Chavez maternal grandparents? As far as I have read Maria Chavez and Danny Cantu were never married? Did I miss some information in the media?
The first weekend this happen whenever anyone entered or exited the police and FBI would check everyone's cars. Also on Saturday the FBI did a complete search of everyone homes, and then on Sunday the Tracy Police did the same. On Monday morning when I was leaving for work they stopped asking us to open our trunks, and they just seemed to wave everyone in and out from that day on. Many of us here believe they knew what direction they were taking the investigation, and who they felt was responsible. If they did believe it was Melissa, because of that letter she claimed she found they obviously didn't have enough evidence at that time. But like many of you I'm just guessing.
And you all think we have a great police department?
I'd be terrified if one of my children went missing and had to rely on them.
Melissa's grandparents moved out around the first of the year. I didn't know them either but after this happen I would see her grandfather at the mailbox maybe twice a month, and he and I would talk about the weather. I did feel sorry for the man, you could easily read that his soul was in a lot of pain by just reading his eyes. I don't know the whole story about them, but like many parents of gang members they just refuse to see the bad in someone they love, so I think I can understand their thinking.
I don't remember ever seeing Melissa before this happen. I do remember seeing her purple Kia several times, and only knew that a female was driving. My only encounter with her came the day before she was arrested. I was helping the police keep those who didn't live in the complex out, and when I asked her what was her address she said sternly "why are you a cop" ? I told her no ma'am I'm a resident here and I'm just helping the police keep those who don't belong here out. She said, well you're doing a fine job, keep it up.
During this time the Tracy Police were fantastic. They had a car at the entrance 24/7 for three weeks to keep the media and those who didn't belong out, and we can't thank them enough. We really have a police department all of us in Tracy can be very proud of.
I've thought similar, esp after reading MH had suicidal thoughts at age 12 (that's rare - esp in a "religious" family - MH wasn't in a home with drug addicts/criminals and shouldn't have hated life). I hadn't thought such abuse may have occurred over a period of time, but if suppressed/covered up, I can see it ruining a person - BUT there are many abuse victims who don't kill. Still hard to believe this happened.
The man was drugged Mar 2. Sandra disappeared Mar 27.
I'm not putting much blame on the cops for this - is easy to see in hindsight - but I didn't like the way Cogburn thought Polk provided the drugs, when Huckaby did and would have had a prescription at the time. The same thing could have been determined after the man's episode on Mar 2.
In any case, MH had problems, the grandparents would have known (MH said cops showed up at 2am to question her about Polk - but didn't search), and they continued to let MH teach Sunday school, and have friends over. Of course, they would not suspect MH would kill her daughter's friend, but they should have known MHs problems were escalating.

The cops have a bit of blame for not nailing MH after she drugged the first girl (in Feb?). It was reported they didn't take the girl's mother seriously because she had a history and smelled of alcohol - so Huckaby was loose to drug an adult and then Sandra. Reports say the same drug (Xanax) was used in all cases. MH had a prescription for this. Easy to piece together. Prosecuting on this would have let people know MH had drugged a little girl, and THEN parents (Sandra's and those with children at MH's "bible class") would know not to let there kids near MH.
The grandparents knew all history, and likely know what tweeked MH from age 12 (or younger), but they covered it up. Cover up also allowed them to have Easter service at the church shortly after Sandra was found, the church was searched, the mattress/etc was removed from the shed... Seems like more denial on their part ("carry on as usual" as if nothing was wrong) - that church should be torn down.
Enough details have come out, though I'd still like to know if police did extensive background on MH. I think people at an out of state church were interviewed about reported molestation that occured on a girl about 20 years ago - when MH would have been about 8-9 years old.
Info out so far about what happened to Sandra is detailed enough, I hope they never release any photos. Not to sound sick, but I hope Sandra was drugged enough to be unconscious when this happened so she didn't know what was going on.
One part I should have mentioned was that Melissa took her sometime during the 4 o'clock hour and Sandra's family went looking for her first before calling the police around 6. So just so you know the family was making the effort to find her before making the call for help.
Its a two way street, Melissa Huckaby's mental health history contributed to the death of Sandra. Which unfortunately mental illness is a difficult illness in and of itself. People diagnosed with a mental illness, have rights ( not excusing but rather to address this) and cannot be discriminated and prevented from working with certain populations due to the mental status. Mental illness has been around since the 70's, by which i mean, awareness, but yet society shuns the mentally ill. Sometimes people who are mentally ill, do not talk about it cause of the stigma of mental illness. Many believe disclosing " I have a mental illness or I have been diagnosed with a mental illness or depression or Schizophrenia", because of the discrimination and ostrocizing that is experienced. In fact, im certain had any residents of the neighboorhood had known she was recieving mental health services, would have bullied her and possibly poked fun of her. She would have not recieved the respect she had during her stay with her grandparents
