Officials are investigating the death of an inmate at a local prison on Thursday, June 3.

At about 7:30 p.m. that night, Jonathan Alexander was found dead in his Deuel Vocational Institution cell by prison staff, according to a DVI media release. The cause of death could not be determined at the scene, the release stated, and the county coroner had yet to release a report about the incident as of 3:40 p.m. today.

The 49-year-old was in the prison’s reception center and was serving a 6-month sentence for a parole violation.

Officials have released little other information about Alexander’s death and the ongoing investigation surrounding it.

Lt. G. Valenzuela at DVI said he “would not speculate” whether or not foul play is suspected in the death, and he said further results will be released once the coroner’s examination is complete.
