Sandra Cantu was 8 years old over a year ago when Melissa Huckaby took her life. When it happened it was deny, deny, deny — then, in a shocking about-face, she entered a guilty plea.
So, why is America broke? For a year, Huckaby has been working the system. She even had Michael Burt join in her defense. If the name sounds familiar, he represented the “Night Stalker.” And the money to pay this San Francisco attorney comes out of a “special fund” in the public defender’s office, which means you’re still paying, California!
Again, Sandra was 8 years old. I won’t mention the other things Huckaby did to this little girl. But she gets a lifetime sentence — so pay and pay and pay. I am convinced stupidity is the ruin of America. The judge that rules this sentence fits the crime shouldn’t be judging any legal venue, in any court, in any state, on any continent. Now you can murder, after this legal precedent is made, and all that is required is to say, “Yes, I did it!” then sit back and wait for the movie.
I offer my condolences to the Cantu family and our country.

Given your view on criminal justice system and by extension the American way of life--you should emigrate to Iran, Saudi Arabia, or perhaps an East African country.
Well said an I agree with ya on everythang ya wrote.
Guess we're both havin a good day. :)
Huckaby used the justice system the same way any one of us would have if we were in her situation. She didn't do anything unusual in her bid to gain a lesser charge or even freedom. She accepted a plea bargain to avoid the death sentence. Smart on her part. The State of California provides this legal defense fund for everyone. I feel the writer is wrapped up in the heinous acts of this crime, as we all are, and does not realize that there is equal justice (or in this case defense) for all of us.
The defense and the district attorney bargained for the best, for each, at the least cost. Personal feelings should not play a role here.
There is an insanity plea possibility. And a premeditated murder conviction is not a certainty.
Sandra's family deserves this to be truly over, though it never will, for the endless nightmare the loss of a child truly is. My sympathies will always be with them.
