A known member of the Norteño gang was arrested Tuesday afternoon after allegedly robbing a room at the Royal Motel, police said.

Donovan Britt, an 18-year-old man from Modesto, is charged with burglary, armed robbery, conspiracy, possession of stolen property and possession of a weapon while committing a felony after he and three friends allegedly stole a jewelry box from a room at the motel on the 1200 block of 11th Street around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

A police spokesman said the four people allegedly entered a room at the motel with a pistol and sawed-off shotgun, which police recovered in an abandoned car that was blocking traffic on west bound 11th Street east of Lincoln Boulevard. The stolen jewelry box was also in the car.

According to the police, Britt is a known member of the Norteño gang, and the spokesman said police will suggest prosecutors charge him with committing a crime to further the gang.

The police are working on identifying the three others involved in the robbery, which they believe are two women and a man in his 20s, the spokesman said.

Police said there were no injuries and are unsure if there is any relationship between the robbery victim and the man in custody.
