Three weeks after the Tracy Hurricanes AAU basketball organization’s 16-and-under boys team qualified for the AAU Boys Basketball National Championships, the Hurricanes’ 15-and-under team, (13-11 overall, 12-6 in division play) took third place in the Pacific AAU district championships in Sacramento this past weekend.

The 15U team competed against 11 teams over two days, going 4-1 for the weekend. That included three wins in a row at the start to make it to the final four.

With aggressive defensive play and a fast-paced transition offense, the Hurricanes beat the Fast Break Basketball Club, 56-53, Chico Rimrockers, 69-62, and Nevada County Hoopsters, 60-37.

The Hurricanes then lost 61-54 in the semifinals to NorCal Pump and Run, which would go on to win the tournament championship. The Hurricanes finished with a 67-60 win over the Rimrockers to claim third place.

Top scorers for the Hurricanes were Chandler Alves with 66 points over five games, Alex Toledo with 63 points, Derek Van de Streek with 37 points and Joe Walls with 36 points. Hurricane guards Anthony Miller and Javon Wilson played aggressive defense, forced many turnovers and each hit momentum-changing shots.

The Hurricanes now prepare for the AAU national championships, with the 15-and-under team headed to Little Rock, Ark., July 6 through 11 for Division II competition and the 16-and-under headed to Orlando, Fla., July 24 through 30 to play as a Division I team.

The team is raising money to pay for transportation and lodging. To make a donation, call 640-0257 or visit www.tracyhurricanes.com.
