Prep roundup: Swimmers set school records in section trials

Swimming Sac-Joaquin Section championships

Two more Tracy High swimming records fell this week in the Sac-Joaquin Section trials at Tokay High, with the girls trials on Thursday and the boys on Friday.

Ella Green set a new school record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.27, which makes her the third seed in the freshman-sophomore girls finals on Saturday. She is also seeded seventh in the finals for the freshman-sophomore girls 50-yard freestyle, qualifying with a time of 26.09.

James Thompson set a new school record in the 200-yard freestyle, 1:49.51, and is seeded third in the freshman-sophomore boys finals in that event. He is also seeded fourth in the freshman-sophomore boys 100-yard butterfly after he qualified with a time of 56:19.

Justin Phelps is seeded seventh in the finals in the freshman-sophomore boys 50 freestyle after he qualified with a time of 23.72.

Kimball High’s Michaela Loomis will swim on Saturday after she set new records for her school in two events. She is seeded seventh in the freshman-sophomore girls 100 breaststroke after she qualified with a time of 1:10.52, and is seeded 15th in the freshman-sophomore girls 200-yard individual medley, qualifying with a time of 2:22.40.

Information on West High’s swimmers was not available.

Gymnastics Santa Clara Valley Athletic League Championships

Tracy High’s gymnastics team placed third at Wednesday’s Santa Clara Valley Athletic League finals at Gymtowne in San Bruno. Tracy’s score of 134.400 was behind first place Gunn High, 140.350, and second place Lowell, 138.050. West placed sixth out of nine teams in the league, 120.300, and Kimball, with only two gymnasts, placed ninth, 51.700.

Tracy qualified as a team to go to the Central Coast Section finals on Thursday, May 20, also at Gymtowne in San Bruno, and West High’s Melissa Marsden qualified as an all-around gymnast, and will compete as an individual.

Leading scorers for Tracy were:

Tracy High’s Breanna Noriega was the top local gymnast with an all-around score of 36.000, including second place on the vault, 8.750. West’s Melissa Marsden placed eighth all-around with a score of 34.950, and Tracy’s Cassidy Dolstra was 13th all-around with a score of 34.350.

Also contributing to Tracy’s team score were Lauren Davichick with 7.800 bars, 8.200 beam, 8.350 floor; Kaitlin Stroup with 8.000 vault, 8.600 floor; Tyler Pendleton with 7.200 bars; Hailey Angelo with 8.000 beam; and Hannah Garrity, 7.900 vault. Tracy’s Desiree Drab also competed and tied for 28th place with teammate Angelo.

Contributing to West’s score were Angela Gullette, 30.350 all-around; Angela Stokes, 27.500 all-around; and Kaitlyn Vigil, 27.500 all-around.

Kimball’s gymnasts were Madeson Dennington, 26.300 all-around, and Julihanna Mandeville, 25.400 all-around.

Junior varsity scores from May 7 include: Jazmin Sioxson, Tracy, 32.100 all-around; Kyndra Godchaux, Tracy, 28.100 all-around; Jordan Katarzy, Kimball, 27.950; and Emily Murphy, Kimball, 20.550 all-around.

Tennis Sac-Joaquin Section team and individual tournaments

Local tennis players were eliminated in the early rounds of Sac-Joaquin Section competition this past week.

Tracy High’s full team went to Turlock on Monday and Tuesday for the first round of the Division I playoffs, which began Monday, and was completed on Tuesday after rain forced cancellation in the middle of the match. Turlock won all nine matches.

Tracy High’s Mitchell Adams had the closest match in the number-four singles after he lost the first set to Alex Wolski 3-6, won the second set 6-2, and took the third set to a tie breaker, which Adams lost 6-7 (7-2). Tracy also forfeited the number-two doubles match.

Other wins for Turlock were: Scott Gray beat Zuhaib Farooqui 6-2, 6-2; Trevor Purdy beat Niraj Punjya 6-2, 6-4; Mike Lazar beat Christophe Pope 6-3, 7-6 (7-4); Nathan Potter beat Anthony Klassen 6-3, 6-1; Jamie Smith beat Himanshu Arora 6-1, 6-1; Bryce Brenda and Brandon Purdy beat Laqshya Teneja and Danville Camegla 6-3, 6-0; and Morley Baker and Eric Smith beat Tommy Langley and Anmol Bhangu 6-3, 6-0.

In the individual tournament on Wednesday at In-Shape Sports Club, West Lane, in Stockton, Tracy’s doubles team of Zuhaib Farooqui and Niraj Punjya had to withdraw because of an academic conflict. West High’s Martin Delgadillo lost in the first round to Lincoln High’s number-one player, 6-2, 6-1.
