The Millennium High girls soccer team took sole possession of the Harvest Christian League championship Tuesday with a 2-2 tie against Jim Elliot Christian in their last game of the regular season

Elliot (6-1-1) still had a chance to take a share of first place if the Eagles could pull off a win against first-place Millennium (7-0-1), and Millennium players knew that Tuesday’s game would not be easy.

“No matter what the outcome of today’s game is, we know that we are still going to have to keep our heads up and compete once playoffs start,” co-captain Yasameen Mohammadi said before the opening kick.

“A win means that we can silence all the critics and prove to everyone that just because we are a small school that does not mean we cannot compete with bigger schools,” co-captain Elyssa Perales added. “You know what they say, ‘The bigger they are, the harder they fall.’”

But Elliot Christian opened the game with two quick scores and held Millennium’s offense scoreless in the first half.

Millennium picked up the pace in the second half.

Mohammadi tracked down a corner kick from Salina Elias to score the Falcons’ first goal. Elias then scored on a shot from the middle on a pass from Perales, tying the game 2-2.

“Winning the league title is great,” said Brianna Murawski, goalie for the Falcons. “Now all we have to do is go at least two deep in the playoffs and win for this accomplishment to really mean what it’s supposed to.”

“All the hard work we put in this year was worth something,” Elias added. “Now all we’ve got to do is show the teams in the playoffs why we are number one in our league.”
