The wonder of ‘Oliver’

EDITOR,

On Wednesday, I had the opportunity to see the preview of “Oliver!” the musical play being presented this weekend by students of Millennium High School.

Like everyone else, I knew the tale of Oliver Twist. What I did not know was the amazing talent hidden in Tracy’s youth. When given a chance, this talent blossomed into full bloom.

It was Scott Snaider, a Millennium High teacher, who gave this opportunity to 40 students from the Tracy Learning Center. To direct “Oliver!”, Mr. Snaider involved, for the first time in a Tracy school production, students ranging from kindergarten through high school.

With a rather tight budget and with the help of some devoted parents and phenomenal enthusiasm from the recruited actors, he succeeded in putting together one of the most artful musicals a school could produce. The scenery, costumes, stage décor, songs and talented actors make you think you are at a little Broadway show.

I could not believe my eyes while I was watching the realistic expressions of the hungry children. I almost teared when little Oliver sang a solo sleeping in “coffin.” I feared for the young high schooler pretending to be strangled by her stage husband. I burst into laughter at the scene of the Bumbles fighting. I wondered with Fagin about his very human dilemma. But above all, I listened in awe when the beautiful Nancy sang.

So, if you are looking for a great family afternoon or evening of entertainment and art, do not hesitate to see “Oliver!”. It is being performed at 2 and 7 p.m. today and at 2 p.m. Sunday in the multipurpose room of the Tracy Learning Center, corner of Holly Drive and Beverly Place. There might be a final performance at 7 p.m. Sunday.

When you make up your mind to attend, hurry to the door for tickets. Be there early because the performances are selling out very fast.
