The Hurricanes dominated early, as they won all three of their opening games to earn a spot in the championship game against the host team, the Livermore Prep Outlawz.
The Hurricanes’ margin of victory during the first three games averaged more than 30 points as they beat the West Coast Eagles, 68-20; the Tracy Jammers, 54-31; and EIB, 54-26.
“This was a great opportunity for us to get everyone on the team involved in the game and get significant minutes on the floor,” coach John Alves said. “Everyone contributed to the wins, and we were able to spread the scoring across the entire roster.”
In the championship game, the Hurricanes took an early lead and held onto it for most of the game. At the end, the Livermore Prep Outlawz hit a couple of key 3-pointers to take a one-point lead with only seconds remaining.
Hurricanes forward Alex Toledo then made a key free throw to tie the game at 44-44. With only two seconds left in the game, the Hurricanes fouled a 3-point shooter who then made two free throws to seal the championship, 46-44.
Top scorers for the Hurricanes over the four-game tournament were Alex Toledo with 53 points, Chandler Alves with 37 points, Luke Hanna with 30 points and Derek Van de Streek with 24 points. Volleyball player’s team wins gold
Destiny Haldi, a seventh-grader at Discovery Charter School, and her volleyball team, Vision Gold out of Los Gatos, took first place at the 2010 Junior Far Westerns tournament, held April 17 through 19 in Reno.
The tournament is a qualifier for the Junior Olympics, which will be in late June and early July in Reno. Haldi’s team, one of two 13-and-under teams with Vision, had already qualified for the Junior Olympics.
On April 17, Vision won three matches in a row in pool play: 25-11, 25-12 over Vibe X-plosion; 25-15, 25-8 over Gold Cal Juniors Black; and 25-4, 25-14 over Stingray Black.
That gave Vision a bye in the first round of bracket play.
In the second round, Vision beat Golden Bear Blue 25-12, 25-16. Vision won the semifinal game against Central Cal Gold 25-15, 25-16, and Vision battled through three sets in the finals against SF Tremor Cobras, winning 28-26, 19-25, 16-14. Winters, Philpott take wins at Stockton 99
Tracy racers claimed three first-place finishes at Stockton 99 Speedway a weekend ago.
Tracy’s Scott Winters took two wins in the track’s two 50-lap events in the Grand American Modified division. Larry Tankersley of Stockton and Kyle Dickerson of Manteca started off in front in the first race, but a crash on the second lap gave Winters a chance to move around the outside and into the lead on the third lap. He held the lead for the rest of the race.
In the second race, Aaron Higgens of Ohio and Dickerson started in front, and Winters worked his way up and took over the lead on the 17th lap and again held onto the lead all the way to the checkered flag.
In the NASCAR Whelen All-American Western Late Models, Tracy’s Justin Philpott started in the No. 3 position and passed Ripon’s Michael Sandoval and Stockton’s Chad Holman to take the lead on Lap 10. Philpott held on for the rest of the race to take his first win of the season at Stockton 99.
Wrestlers compete
in Sacramento
Thirteen of the Tracy USA Wrestling Club members traveled to a Sacramento Area Wrestling Association freestyle tournament last weekend to compete with more than 700 wrestlers from all over Northern and Central California.
Some divisions were split into two brackets, with winners of each bracket facing off for the championship.
Of the 13 wrestlers, four brought home medals and three others were just one match away from the medal rounds.
In the Rookie Division, Micah Viloria performed well, though no winners are declared in the division.
In the Intermediate Division, Sammo Blackwell took home a third-place medal.
In the Novice Division, Gregory Viloria overcame tough competition to take home one of the club’s two first-place finishes. Also in the Novice Division, Jaskaran Singh beat all opponents in his bracket and faced the champion of the opposing bracket, where he took a loss for second place.
In the Middle School Division, Alex Garcia took home Tracy USA’s other first-place finish, including a win against an opponent who had beaten him earlier in the season.
In the Cadet (or High School) Division, three Tracy wrestlers — Zach Blackwell, Amrit Singh and Albert Landeros — finished one win away from medals, all taking home a fourth-place finish.
Other wrestlers included Eli Blackwell, Jace Pimentel, Noah Fithian, Noah Blackwell and Mike Frymyer.
