Tracy High alumnus Nick Eddy is one of 25 athletes to enter the section’s hall of fame. Eddy was named the 1961 Cal-Hi Sports medium-schools football player of the year and also was Cal-Hi Sports’ 1962 medium-schools athlete of the year. Eddy went on to become an All-American running back for Notre Dame. In 1966, Notre Dame won the national championship, and Eddy was third in the voting for the Heisman Trophy. He also played four years with the Detroit Lions, 1968 to 1972, as a running back and kick returner.
Tracy High football coach Wayne Schneider is one of 13 coaches to enter the hall of fame. He had a record of 224-59-5 in 24 years as a coach, including the seasons from 1965 to 1972 and 1977 to 1994. Schneider was the Cal-Hi Sports football coach of the year in 1982 and led his teams to Sac-Joaquin Section Division I championships in 1982 and 1987.
The lone media outlet to be named to the hall of fame is Stockton-based Cal-Hi Sports, founded by Nelson Tennis in 1975. His nephew Mark Tennis was the sports editor for the Tracy Press in the 1980s and went on to join Nelson in building Cal-Hi Sports as the definitive source for high school sports news and information in the Sac-Joaquin Section and across California. Their efforts include the Cal-Hi Sports record book, now in its seventh edition, and their website, www.calhisports.com.
The hall of fame includes four officials and 12 administrators and benefactors. All inductees will be honored during an induction banquet at Sacramento’s Arco Arena in October. The date and time of the banquet will be announced later.
