In her third year at Mercer University, a former Tracy High softball pitcher set the school’s strikeout record.

Jenni Holtz, who pitched for the Bulldogs from 2004 to 2007, fanned her 723rd batter of her college career against Belmont University on April 10, breaking Katie Rosentreter’s record of 722, set in 2006. As of Friday, she had 732 strikeouts.

To set the record, Holtz recorded 16 strikeouts in two games Saturday.

At Tracy High, Holtz pitched for Bulldog teams that won the San Joaquin Athletic Association championship in her junior and senior years. With 623 career strikeouts, Holtz holds the Tracy record. She also has the Bulldog record for wins, with 55.

“I knew she was going to do really well in college,” Tracy varsity softball coach Greg Smith said. “I keep looking for another Jenni Holtz to come to Tracy. One of these days, maybe.”
