Local Roundup: Local gymnasts excel in Long Beach

Eight gymnasts from Edge Gymnastics in Dublin competed at the Level 8, 9 and 10 Region 1 Gymnastics Championship, on April 8 through 11, at the American Gymnastics Academy and Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach.

Tracy’s Vinnesa Narvaez, in the Junior 7 age group, finished in third place on the vault with a score of 9.225, seventh on the bars, third on the beam and fourth place on the floor. Narvaez has qualified for the Women’s Junior Olympic Level 9 Western Championships, which will take place April 29 through May 2 in Des Moines, Iowa.

In the Region 1 competition, Tracy’s Alicia Woo finished seventh all-around in the Level 8 11B age group, with fourth-place finishes on the bars and the beam. Teammate Elizabeth Higa finished 28th overall in the Junior C 14-year-old age group.

Woo and Higa, who both live in Tracy, are members of the West Coast Olympic Gymnastics Academy of Pleasanton.

From March 19 through 21, Woo and Higa also competed at the NorCal Levels 8-10 Womens’ State Gymnastics Championship in Oroville. Woo placed third in her age group (11-year-olds) with an all-around score of 37.475. She had the seventh-highest score for all Level 8 age groups (ages 10 through 18). Higa competed in the Junior C age group, finishing in first place on the bars with a 9.5 score and placing fifth overall, scoring 35.45 all-around.

Wrestling

The Tracy USA Wrestling Club sent 15 athletes to a meet at Deer Valley High in Antioch over the weekend, competing in both Greco and Freestyle wrestling.

In the Cadet (high school) division, Zach Blackwell placed first in Greco and third in Freestyle, Albert Landeros placed second in Greco and first in Freestyle and Amrit Singh placed first in Freestyle and second in Greco wrestling for their weight classes.

In the middle school division, Justin Morales won gold in both the Freestyle and Greco competitions in his weight class. Andrawas Husary placed first in Freestyle. Noah Blackwell finished second in Greco and third in Freestyle. Alex Garcia placed second in Freestyle.

In the novice division, Jaskaran Singh earned first place in Greco and third in Freestyle

In the intermediate division, Noah Fithian placed third in Greco and second in Freestyle; Jace Pimentel finished second in Greco and third in Freestyle; Nolan Willis got third place in Freestyle; Sammo Blackwell took home first in Freestyle and second in Greco; and Eli Blackwell finished second in Freestyle and first in Greco.

Sammo and Eli Blackwell were pitted against each other in both Freestyle and Greco matches. Sammo won the Freestyle final against his brother in a close match. In the Greco match, the final was a best out of three matches. Sammo won the first before falling to his younger brother in the second and third matches.

Basketball

The Tracy National Junior Basketball league sent three teams to the Divisional All-Star tournament in late March and last weekend in Los Angeles. Division 1 (for seventh- and eighth-graders) and Division 2 (fifth- and sixth-graders) competed March 27 and 28, and Division 3 (third- and fourth-graders) competed Saturday and Sunday. Division 1 players contributed their best efforts. Division 2 won three games, while Division 3 took home third place. The Division 3 team won four of its five games.
