Atwater 2, West 1
West High narrowly missed taking home the championship in its bracket, losing its final game Friday afternoon to Buhach from Atwater, 2-1.
Wolf Pack coach Steve Anastasio said his team, which was error-free up until that game, made a costly mistake in the first inning to give the Thunder an early 2-0 lead. West was able to put up another run but could not do much more.
To get to the championship game, the Wolf Pack (11-6) topped Turlock, 2-1, in 11 innings Friday morning. In the top of the 11th, senior Elida Rubio hit a two-run home run to break a scoreless tie. West was able to stave off a Bulldog rally in the bottom of the inning for the win.
Rubio and junior pitcher Andi Anderson, who struck out 40 in the four-game tournament, made the all-tournament team.
At 5 p.m. Wednesday, the Wolf Pack will play St. Mary’s in Stockton.
Tracy 1, Lodi 0
Tracy eked out a 1-0 victory Friday night against Lodi, its second game of the day.
Senior infielder Stephanie Fisher knocked in an RBI double in the first inning to give the Bulldogs the only lead they would need. Junior pitcher Taylor Martinez earned the win.
A Bear River double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning sent home the tying and winning runs Friday evening, as the Bruins beat Tracy High, 4-3.
The Bulldogs (5-8) led most of the game but were unable to stop Bear Creek in the final moments. Despite the loss, Tracy coach Greg Smith was upbeat about his team’s play.
“We want to be perform well and we’ll be ready for league,” he said.
Senior infielder Rebecca Titus was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and pitcher Stephanie Fisher, who took the loss, was 3-for-4.
Downey 7, Millennium 1
Millennium split the two games it played Thursday and will continue tournament play against Dos Palos at 8 a.m. today at West High.
Hampered by errors and miscues, Millennium lost its second-round matchup to Downey, 7-1, on Thursday afternoon.
Falcons (4-4) coach Sam Haines said his team’s defense “didn’t show up,” in the game, making mistakes in the outfield. Junior Nicole Ochoa knocked in Millennium’s one run with a single in the first inning.
Millennium advanced to the second-round of the Classic after trumping Weston Ranch, 4-3, on Thursday morning. Junior Kelsea Eakin smacked in a two-run double, and sophomore pitcher Melissa Vierra got the win, going all seven innings.
Sophomore: Escalon 6, Tracy 1
Tracy’s sophomore softball team took home second place at the NorCal Classic Sophomore Tournament, held Thursday and Friday at Northgate Park in Manteca.
The Bulldogs (5-7) faced Escalon on Friday afternoon with the championship on the line. Tracy made a few mental mistakes that cost the team the game, coach Gerianne McGee said, losing 6-1.
“We just didn’t have our game mentally,” McGee said.
Loran Saenz struck out six but gave up six hits and three walks. Courtney Rinnert scored the only run for the Bulldogs.
Prior to that game, Tracy beat Pitman, 3-0. Brianna Warner, a freshman, pitched six innings, fanning nine. Saenz went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
