Four local football players were selected to play in the 37th annual Lions All-Star Football Classic on June 19 at the University of the Pacific’s Stagg Memorial Stadium.

Three Tracy High seniors to play in the game include running back Depray Celestine, linebacker Billy Simon and offensive tackle Kevin Speer. The only West player named to the team is running back Dexter Alcala.

The Lions introduced players Saturday night during a banquet at the Peterson Event Center in Modesto. All players, 30 for each team, have agreed to play in the game and are all seniors from high schools in the Lions’ District 4-A1, which ranges from San Joaquin County south to Merced County and includes the foothills.

The local players are on the North team, which includes schools in the San Joaquin Athletic Association, Tri-City Athletic League, Valley Oak League, Mother Lode League and Trans Valley League.

The South team draws players from Modesto Metro Conference, Central California Conference, Trans Valley League, Valley Oak League and Western Athletic Conference.

The week before the game includes workouts and drills at the University of the Pacific, where the North team stays, and California State University, Stanislaus, in Turlock, where the South team will stay.

Coaches this year are Don Norton from Stagg High of Stockton for the North and Roger Canepa of Central Catholic High of Modesto for the South.

Last year’s 19-3 triumph for the South snapped a six-game winning streak in the series by the North. The South still trails in the overall series, however, with the North holding a record of 21-14-1.
