The San Joaquin County Coroner has identified the man who died Feb. 12 after a rollover accident on 11th Street as Kevin Merritt, 52, who was living in San Jose.

Merritt died at about 2:30 p.m. Feb. 12 after he was ejected from a speeding Mercedes when its driver lost control. Two others in the car were taken to hospitals.

The California Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash before it decides whether to cite the driver, a 44-year-old Tracy man who was mildly injured and refused medical attention.

The man was speeding

westward in a gold Mercedes on 11th Street between Chrisman Road and the railroad overpass when the car veered to the right and flipped at least six times, a witness said.

Merritt, who sat in the front seat, was not wearing a seat belt. A 12-year-old Tracy girl in the back seat who wasn’t wearing a seat belt was also thrown from the car. She was flown by helicopter to University of California, Davis, Medical Center.

A 35-year-old Tracy woman was taken by ambulance to San Joaquin General Hospital.

Common people, what is wrong with you... be a good example to children and also teach them how important wearing a seat belt is. Most injuries could have been avoided by this easy step. Who cares if you trust the person driving... realize all the other people on the road you don't know. Horrible, that is all I have to say. That poor girl could have died... thank god she didn't.

It's bad enough that adults chose not to wear seat belts but not seeing that a 12 year old child is buckled up is criminal.
