The West High wrestlers won the Tri-City Athletic League tournament at Edison High in Stockton on Saturday. The league’s overall title went to McNair High, which took second place on Saturday, but had been undefeated in league duals, which gave the Eagles the advantage over West.

“Even though we didn’t win the league title all 14 guys advanced, and that’s what matters,” West coach Ed Carlos said, adding that West sends a full team to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I South tournament on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Lincoln High in Stockton.

“I expected we were going to wrestle well,” Carlos said, adding that all of the week leading up to the tournament the team intensified its workouts in the small wrestling room behind West’s pool, and the efforts paid off.

West went into the final round with a substantial lead in the team points standings, and then won three of the final matches for a score of 242 at the end, with McNair at 212.5 and Stagg in third place with 198. Tokay, St. Mary’s, Edison, Kimball were fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh place, respectively.

Every one of West’s 14 wrestlers finished in the top four, and will advance to the sub-section meet next weekend. Carlos also was named Coach of the Year by the other TCAL coaches.

First place winners were Justin Martin Del-Campo (112), who won by pin over his opponent from Stagg in 5:11, Trevor Manois (119), who beat a wrestler from McNair 7-1, and Kris Merrill (275), who beat his opponent from McNair 6-3.

Second place finishers were: Ulysses Juan (103), Daniel Mora (130), Daniel Austin (135), Adam Crandall (152), and Dominic Williams (275). Third place wrestlers were: Daniel Aflague (125), Jacob Biehl (145), Jonny Cabral-Ramsey (189) and Matt Mahe (215). Taking fourth place were: Daniel Banuelos (140), and Jose Sanchez (160).

Also advancing is Kimball High’s Jamill Watan (112), who took third place in his class.
