Road work that can be seen on 11th Street east of Tracy Boulevard will synchronize traffic signals to cut down travel time on the main street as well as air pollution.

Similar work is being done on Grant Line Road to fill in unsynchronized gaps from about Lammers Road to MacArthur Drive, said Tracy engineer Ripon Bhatia.

Crews are linking the traffic lights to Tracy’s traffic control room in City Hall, where computers are used to monitors signals and set the length of time lights will stay green.

The idea is to line up green lights for drivers on the main street, particularly during the morning and evening commutes, as well as during the lunch hour, to keep traffic flowing.

It gets drivers to where they want to go more quickly, and lessens the amount of stops cars make, which in turn cuts pollution.

Bhatia said Tracy got grant money from the state to pay for the work on 11th Street and Grant Line Road. It will cost about $274,000 to connect the light to the traffic room in City Hall, and crews have until May to finish the job, though Bhatia said he expects they’ll be done before then.

The timing of the light at Grant Line and Orchard Parkway needs to be adjusted as well. When turning left onto Grant Line from Orchard Parkway, the light turns yellow before a driver can complete the turn unless one is driving a race car.

And just when is Tracy going to widen Corral Hollow up to and under the 205 overpass. For years now I have seen numerous accidents at Corral Hollow and Kavanaugh Ave. because the city refuses to widen the street & provide a turn lane. I believe most people going to the mall have either seen an accident or been in one. The Feds have widened the overpass at 205 which would certainly allow for at least another lane under it. When is the city going to take a serious look at safety in this area, there is a school less than a quarter-mile from this intersection!!!

This is a much needed addition to the roads around Tracy. Corral Hollow Road also needs to be timed! I used to be able to drive across town quickly, but now with all the stoplights it takes 15 or 20 minutes just to get to the mall. Please keep going and time the lights on this major road in Tracy!

Timing the lights will help business too, making access to retailers easier!
