Road work that can be seen on 11th Street east of Tracy Boulevard will synchronize traffic signals to cut down travel time on the main street as well as air pollution.
Similar work is being done on Grant Line Road to fill in unsynchronized gaps from about Lammers Road to MacArthur Drive, said Tracy engineer Ripon Bhatia.
Crews are linking the traffic lights to Tracy’s traffic control room in City Hall, where computers are used to monitors signals and set the length of time lights will stay green.
The idea is to line up green lights for drivers on the main street, particularly during the morning and evening commutes, as well as during the lunch hour, to keep traffic flowing.
It gets drivers to where they want to go more quickly, and lessens the amount of stops cars make, which in turn cuts pollution.
Bhatia said Tracy got grant money from the state to pay for the work on 11th Street and Grant Line Road. It will cost about $274,000 to connect the light to the traffic room in City Hall, and crews have until May to finish the job, though Bhatia said he expects they’ll be done before then.
