The West High girls finally put one in the win column Tuesday night with a 51-44 victory at home over Stagg High.
West broke its 10-game losing streak and got its first Tri-City Athletic League win of the 2009-10 season in overtime. West and Stagg played four quarters of close basketball, in which the Wolf Pack (3-20 overall, 1-6 TCAL) and the Delta Queens (5-16,
1-7) finished the first half tied 18-18 and the third
quarter tied 25-25.
The Wolf Pack and the Delta Queens battled for the lead in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter, and with West leading 37-35 in the closing seconds, Stagg got off a -point shot from the floor to tie it up with five seconds left.
In overtime, West had the advantage through free throws.
West and Stagg still traded the lead until West’s Haleigh Taylor hit a shot from the floor with a minute left, and a technical foul called on Stagg allowed Taylor to go to the line and sink four shots in a row to give West a 48-42 lead.
West drew a few more fouls and hit three more from the line, and Stagg hit another from the floor for the final 51-44 score.
“There was a lot of pressure, but I blocked out the noise and listened to my coach and had some motivation from my teammates,” Taylor said, adding that her team was ready to log a win Tuesday. “We did really well. We worked together as a team — coaches, everyone. Everyone came in thinking we were going to win, and we pushed ourselves to the end.”
Free throws turned out to be key for West, as the Wolf Pack went 21-of-32 from the free-throw line Tuesday, including 10-of-13 in overtime.
West also relied on Analisa Green, who had 17 rebounds for the night and 13 points, including key shots at the end of the fourth quarter and the overtime period to keep West in the game.
“It was kind of nerve-wracking, because I had four fouls and was trying not to foul at the last second,” Green said, adding that she had to stay aggressive to keep rebounding and scoring.
The leading scorer for West was Lesley Baires with 15 points, including two 3-pointers to get West started early on and six of eight free throws. Green scored 13; Taylor scored nine, including five of six free throws; and Nina Pritchett scored eight and had 17 rebounds.
