West High’s wrestlers closed their dual match season with a 40-18 win over the Tokay Tigers in Lodi on Wednesday. The win leaves West with a 4-1 record in the Tri-City Athletic League, behind first-place McNair, 5-0, and ahead of third place Tokay, 3-2. West’s overall record for dual meets is 7-1.

“It’s bittersweet because we wish we could have done better against McNair,” West coach Ed Carlos said.

The last contest this year for West as a team will be the TCAL tournament on Saturday, Feb. 13, at Edison High in Stockton. West’s only chance to take the league championship this year is to win that tournament as a team and hope that one other team in the league can come in ahead of McNair. McNair already is TCAL’s entry into the Sac-Joaquin Section Team Duals at Rosemont High School on Saturday.

The league tournament on Feb. 13 will be a chance for individual wrestlers to qualify for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I South tournament on Friday, Feb. 19, at Lincoln High in Stockton. The top four wrestlers in each weight class at the league meet will go to the division meet, which is on the path to the section and state competition.

West won nine of the 14 matches, including: Ulysses Juan (103) pinned Chris Tolentino in 1:18; Justin Martin Del Campo (112) pinned Amitos Mangat in 3:41; Mitch Selna (119) beat Mike Kinane 6-0; Daniel Aflague (125) beat Manley Andres 7-5; Daniel Mora (130) beat Jacob Schallberger 10-4; Daniel Austin (135) beat Anthony Sobera 9-1; Jacob Biehl (140) beat George Parisis 17-2; Adam Crandall (152) beat Kostas Parisis 11-1; and Kris Merrill (285) pinned Adan Salas in 3:35.

Individual matches that went to Tokay were: Alex Lecocq (145) beat Dan Baneulos 4-0; Nick Parisis (160) beat Jose Sanchez 2-1; Logan Schallberger (171) beat Dominic Williams 6-2; Andrew Richards (189) pinned Michael Anguelo in 4:28; and Matt Powaser (215) beat Matt Mahe 8-6.
