Local Roundup: Wrestlers bring medals back from Merced

The Tracy USA Wrestling club traveled to Merced on Sunday for the Mat Cat Clash at Golden Valley High. The club took nine Tracy wrestlers to the meet and took home three medals.

Alex Garcia was in the middle school division, as he won his championship match by pin; Eli Blackwell took second place in the intermediate division after he lost the championship match by a decision; and newcomer Riley Revino came back from a first-round loss and won four in a row to take third place in the bantam division.

TFC player selected for district team

Govinder Somal of the Tracy Futbol Club’s under-10 Warriors will make a move into a higher age bracket after he recently tried out for the Player Development Program NorCal Region 8 District soccer team combined of under-11/under-12 age group players. He was one of the youngest players to try out for the team. The NorCal Premier Player Development Program seeks to identify top soccer players, provide specialized training with experienced coaches and offer opportunities for national and international exposure.

Gymnast competes in Las Vegas

Vinessa Narvaez, who trains at Edge Gymnastics Training Center of Dublin, finished in fifth place all-around in the Level 9 competition at the Lady Luck Invitational in Las Vegas this past weekend. She took fifth place in the vault, 8.775; fourth on the uneven bars, 8.15; seventh on the balance beam, 8.375; and fourth on the floor exercises, 8.6. Her team from Edge took fourth place.

Cougars log win in Elk Grove

The California Cougars girls under-18 soccer team defeated County Line Heat, 2-0, in NorCal Premier State Cup play this past weekend in Elk Grove. Sydnee Koscielecki and Alexis Poppoff had one goal and one assist each. Goalkeeper Brianna Murawski posted the shutout behind the strong defensive play of Karly Dunning, Sarah Manseau, Michelle Russell, Alyssa Strope and Melissa Worthington. With the win, the Cougars advance to the next round of the NorCal Premier State Cup.

The California Cougars girls under-15 soccer team lost two tough NorCal League and State Cup matches this past weekend in Stockton and Petaluma. On Saturday, the Cougars fell 1-0 to Davis Legacy. Despite the loss, the Cougars limited Davis to only a few shots on goal behind the defensive play of Grace Cabri, Katia Gaytan, Taylor Long, Kristina Miles, Dianna Murillo and Bailey Smith.

On Sunday in NorCal State Cup play, the Cougars fell to Sonoma County Alliance, 3-2. Katia Gaytan and Fiona Kennedy scored the Cougars’ goals, but Alliance scored on a 20-yard free kick in the middle of the second half.
