West High graduate Michelle Hurlock, competing with the U.C. Davis women’s gymnastics team as a junior, started her season with a four-way home meet Sunday against San Jose State, Cal State Fullerton and Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Davis finished with a team score of 191.000, the highest score recorded by an Aggie women’s gymnastics team in its opening meet. It was enough for second place, behind San Jose State at 191.800.

Hurlock’s scores on the vault, 9.625; uneven bars, 9.525; and balance beam, 9.025, contributed to her team’s overall score.

Bella Vista team takes first at tourney

Bella Vista Christian Academy’s varsity girls team took first place in the Mission Peak Classic Basketball Tournament last weekend in Fremont.

Kate Bell was named tournament most valuable player, and Taylor Vernon was named to the all-tournament team.

Bella Vista also sent its boys team to the tournament, and the boys went 1-2 for the tournament.

Both teams will begin their league season Tuesday with away games at Grace Modesto.
