STOCKTON — Tracy High wrestlers took first place in the David Mendoza Memorial Tournament at Lincoln High School Saturday.

The 16-team event put the local wrestlers up against a couple of their tough San Joaquin Athletic Association opponents, including Lincoln, which took third place, and Lodi, which had some formidable individual wrestlers, including the one Tracy’s Chad Fraga faced in the final match of the day.

“I knew he was a good opponent and knew his stuff,” Fraga said. He went 2-1 for the day, with a pin on his opponent from West High in 1:17 and a pin on his opponent from East Union in 1:00.

Also taking second place medals were Dylan Smith (160) and Josh Tristan (130). Both went 3-1 for the day. Tristan pinned opponents from Franklin and East Union and won an 8-4 decision over his opponent from Lincoln before he was pinned by Amador High’s wrestler. Smith pinned opponents from Will C. Wood, Lincoln and St. Helena before he lost a 6-9 decision to the wrestler from Bret Harte High.

Even without any first-place medals, Tracy won enough matches to take the top points total as a team. Tracy collected 95 points, Wood 88, Lincoln 79, Bret Harte 75 and East Union 61.

Third place medals went to Tracy’s Jesse Leanos (103), who battled up through the consolation bracket after he lost his second round match, and ended up going 5-1 for the day. Tracy’s Josh Mandeville (119) went 3-1 for the day, and had to beat West High’s Ty Rekart to get the third place medal. Tracy’s Bailey Barnes went 1-1 and took third place in the 145-pound bracket. Tyler Huckaby (171) went 3-1 and qualified for the third place match, but it was declared a tie because his opponent had reached the maximum six matches allowed for the day.

West High’s Rekart went the furthest in the bracket for his team. He went 2-2 for the meet and ended up with a fourth place medal. West’s varsity wrestlers went to competition in Windsor, but the Wolf Pack had seven junior varsity wrestlers at the meet. Edgar Ruiz (130) and Obdulio Villapando (285) both went 1-2 and Villapando also wrestled in the fifth place match. The others went 0-2.

Other Tracy High wrestlers to place include: Cameron Henle (112), who went 3-2 for the day, and Chase Nicholson (135) who went 2-2, each took fourth place; Travis Nunes (125) went 4-2 and took fifth place; and Conrad Jayne (189) went 1-3 and took sixth place. Also winning at least one match were Zack White (140) 1-2, and Zack Blackwell (103) 1-2.
