John Lee Brumfield, 23, Lazario Lamark Mitchell, 24, and Ramel Leroy Andrews, 28, were arrested on suspicion of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping at about 12:03 p.m. on Wednesday.
Three men were sitting in a Dodge Caravan at the corner of Tracy Boulevard and Linne Road, when they asked a man who was leaving a convenience store if he’d like to smoke marijuana with them, said San Joaquin County Sheriff’s detective and spokesman Dave Konecny.
When the man went into the van, Konecny said, Brumfield allegedly pointed a replica gun at the man and the suspects told him to take everything out of his pockets. The victim noticed the doors were locked, and Brumfield allegedly told the man to give up his car keys and hit the guy in the right cheek with the replica gun when he refused, investigators said.
The blow caused swelling and bruising, according to Konecny.
As the man tried to escape from the van, Andrews allegedly started to drive north on Tracy Boulevard. The victim was “in fear for his life,” Konecny said, and started kicked out and then crawled through the passenger side window while the car was going about 5 to 10 miles per hour, Konecny said.
The man then ran back to his car and followed the van down Tracy Boulevard. Brumfield allegedly pointed the fake gun at the man, who veered off to his left. Konecny said the suspects’ van swerved into the man’s car and damaged his front bumper.
The chase continued on I-5 after that, Konecny said, reaching speeds of about 100 mph. The cars raced down the freeway until just north of Mossdale Road, according to Konecny’s report, when Andrews allegedly slammed on the brakes to avoid rear-ending a commercial vehicle.
Konecny said the victim’s car rear-ended the van, causing it to lose control and hit a pole on the right shoulder of the freeway. After that, the three men ran away, but were caught by Sheriff’s Deputies.
Andrews, Brumfield and Mitchell were taken to San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp.
