Tracy’s wrestlers passed an important test Tuesday when they took a 40-31 win at home over the Eagles from McNair High in the first of three dual matches this week.
Tuesday’s match pitted two league champions against each other: Tracy, the first-place team from the San Joaquin Athletic Association last year, and McNair, the defending champion of the Tri-City Athletic League.
Tracy won eight of 14 matches — four of them by pin, one by forfeit and three by decision.
Tracy wrestlers to win by pin included Anthony Epelstein in the 103-pound weight class, who pinned his opponent one minute, 19 seconds into the first round. Bishop Nguyen (112) pinned his opponent in 35 seconds, Jacob Koster (119) won by pin in 49 seconds, and Tyler Huckaby (189) won by pin in 1:24.
Dylan Smith (171) won by 14-3, a major decision; Daniel Nunes (130) won with an 8-7 decision; and Chase Nicholson (140) won with a 9-7 decision.
McNair won the junior varsity match 43-33, taking eight of 14 matches, including four by pin, two by forfeit and two by decision.
Tracy wrestlers to win their matches were: Albert Landeros (103), by pin in 1:10; Joshua Gomez-Zavala (119), 10-6; Manuel Gamez (125), by pin in 3:55; Tyler Hoffman (152) by pin in 3:27; and Oscar Gerstenberger (171), by pin in 1:50.
The next big test for Tracy will be Wednesday at West High against the Wolf Pack, which took first place at McNair’s home tournament this past weekend. That match begins with junior varsity competition at 6 p.m.
West takes first at McNair High Tournament
West High’s wrestling team took first place at the McNair High Tournament in Stockton on Saturday.
Coach Ed Carlos said the top finish, at a meet hosted by the defending Tri-City Athletic League champion McNair Eagles, is an encouraging start for the season, coming as it does on the heels of a dual meet win last week against Lodi.
“We’ll enjoy the success, but we have bigger goals in mind,” Carlos said. “We’re training for league, divisionals, masters and state, and everything before that is just a warm-up.”
Junior Justin Martin Del Campo took first place in the 112-pound weight class, the top finish for his team. Trevor Manaois (119), Daniel Mora (135) and Kris Merrill (285) each placed second in their classes.
Adam Crandall (152) took fourth place, Michael Anguelo (215) took fifth place, and Ulysses Juan (103) and Rogelio Bravo (130) each took sixth place.
West’s wrestlers will compete again today as they host Tracy High in the annual crosstown match at 6 p.m. The Wolf Pack will then travel to Stockton on Thursday to face Lincoln.
Tracy takes sixth at tournament
Tracy High’s wrestlers took sixth place Saturday at the Falcon 24-Team Varsity Duals at Freedom High in Oakley.
Assistant coach Larry Nicholson said some teams didn’t make the event, so it was a 17-team dual event, and Tracy ended up in the toughest part of the bracket, with an early match against eventual tournament champion James Logan High of Union City.
Top wrestlers from Tracy were Chase Nicholson, who went 4-1 in the 140-pound weight class, and Chad Fraga, who went 3-1 in the heavyweight class. Several of their teammates — Dylan Smith, Tyler Huckaby, Austin Shankel and Manuel Gamez — went 3-2 for the tournament.
“We went there with a pretty young team, and most of the guys moved up a weight class,” coach Nicholson said.
Foothill beat Tracy 43-32 in the teams’ first match, and Tracy beat Albany 36-35 in the second match of the day, with Bishop Nguyen, in the last individual contest of the match, turning a disadvantage on points into a win with a pin in the third round.
Logan beat Tracy 60-9 in Tracy’s third match of the day; Clayton Valley beat Tracy 48-14; and Terra Linda High of San Rafael beat Tracy 41-27 as the Bulldogs forfeited three matches because of injuries.
Tracy faced TCAL champion McNair at home Tuesday, faces West today and will host Tokay on Thursday. Results of Tuesday’s match was not available as of press time.
