Kimball High’s basketball teams opened their seasons tonight with games at West High and at Liberty Ranch High in Galt.

The Kimball boys hosted the Liberty Ranch Hawks at West, where the Hawks took a 51-38 win in the sophomore game after they came out strong in the first quarter and finished strong in the fourth.

Sophomore coach Justin Gregory said that the team is still working out which players will do best in particular roles.

“At stretches, it was hard to put all four quarters together, and that boils down to team unity,” he said. “We’re still working on different combinations to see what the best chemistry is: Five devoted guys who are going to play hard and play smart.”

The bright spots, he said, were when the Jaguars clamped down on defense. That’s when he saw players work together best.

“When we started to take breaks, we got beat. It was a communication breakdown that hampered us.”

Freshman Alex Toledo was the team’s top scorer with 10 points for the night, and he was also the team’s top rebounder. Elisha Mitchell also came though with rebounds in the second half, and Kimball’s other top scorers were Paulo Dinglasan and Tyrell Brewer with six each.
