Local gymnasts storm Nor Cal championship

Several local gymnasts attended the Nor Cal Gymnastics state championship Saturday and Sunday at Las Positas College in Livermore.

Among the gymnasts who competed in the Level 5 championship was Jaala Downes of Tracy, who trains at West Coast Olympic Gymnastics Academy in Pleasanton. Downes, age 9, placed sixth all-around with a score of 35.975. Her score included the following events: beam, 13th, 8.85; vault, 10th, 8.75; bars, seventh, 9.225; and floor, fourth, 9.15.

Gymnasts from Classic Gymnastics of Tracy also competed in the weekend’s tournament.

Katelyn Garay took 12th place overall in the 10-and-younger age group with a score of 33.95. Her individual event scores were vault, ninth, 8.45; bars, eighth, 8.85; beam, 11th, 8.75; and floor, 15th, 7.90.

Lauren Giles placed 10th in the 13-year-old age group with an all-around score of 34.75, including second place on the vault with a score of 9.025. Her other scores: bars, sixth, 9.35; beam, 16th, 8.2; and floor, 14th, 8.175.

Ellie Higgins was 17th overall with a score of 32.65 in the 10-and-older division. Her scores: vault, 15th, 8.1; bars, 14th, 8.525; beam, 16th, 8.325; and floor, 17th, 7.7.

In the Level 6 competition, on Nov. 14 and 15 in Lemoore, Donna Rotella of Classic Gymnastics placed 17th all-around with a score of 33.65. Her results: vault, sixth, 9.025; bars, 23rd, 7.725; beam, 21st, 8.3; and floor, eighth, 8.6.

Level 4 state championships will be Dec. 5 and 6 in Pinole. Ten gymnasts from Classic Gymnastics will compete for state titles.
