On Friday night, I stood in disbelief as the whistle signaled the end of the game. Edison 22, West 21. Not because of the score, but because of the call by the officials.
In football, games are won and lost in the final seconds based on calls by the officials. Some are good, and some are bad — imperfect people doing a very difficult job.
On Friday night, I stood in disbelief, but I also stood proud to be part of the Wolf Pack. The coaches and players handled themselves with class.
Although the books may not reflect a win, the West High football team won. They were truly attempting to pursue victory with honor, and a bad call from the officials can’t take that away! Go Wolf Pack!
• Editor’s note: A last-second field goal by the West High football team that would have given the Wolf Pack a 24-22 victory was ruled no good by the officials, though video of the kick shows the ball bouncing off the crossbar and going through the uprights.
