EDITOR,

My hat is off to the unsung heroes of our Public Works Department!

Having one of the many trees that fell during our recent storm on our fence, I placed a call to the Public Works Department, and they came out the next day, cut up and removed the tree, no questions asked.

Thanks, guys!

Having worked for another city's Public Works maintenance operation for over 18 years, nothing upsets me more than to read/hear blanket statements like Adios just made about Tracy's (or any) Public Works maintenance operation. There are goof-offs in every organization that should be dealt with, but to say every City employee driving a white truck is not doing their job is WRONG.

I've been in Tracy since 1988 and during that time have called the City many times to report problems, request service and place a complaint or two. Not every time did I get the service I asked for, but I did get an explanation as to why. And if I didn't agree with that explanation, I took my issue to the next level in the organization. I also found if I called with a specific complaint -- with details like who, what, when, where -- a supervisor or manager addressed my concern and I was given a follow-up call/written report.

If Adios (or any other Tracy resident) sees employees acting inappropriately or not doing their jobs, be proactive and report what you see to the City. Of course you can't just say "I saw truck 6 driving around Tracy on Monday not working." and expect a manager/supervisor to take your complaint seriously. There are many reasons truck 6 is driving around Tracy. Have specifics when you call in (date, time, location).

I recall a situation years ago in my City when a resident reported an employee shopping on City time. She was furious because he was wasting her hard earned taxpayer money. Turned out the person in question was purchasing bottles from a local hardware store to collect water samples because his job as Water Quality Technician was to do just that. He made that purchase a few times a month and no one ever questioned his actions until that woman saw him on that day. Once it was explained why he was "shopping on City time" she thanked him for the job he was doing.

Just remember, while you are safe and warm in your house during the next storm, Public Works personnel are removing trees, clearing drains and gutters, posting signs etc. Yes they get paid, but that doesn't change the fact that they are doing these jobs so you and I don't have to.

It's no picnic working from a truck. Used to do that for a living. Worked for a company that did landscape for a big hotel. Job well done! And that was one heckofa storm too.

Not bad, one day of full work for the white cruising city trucks. Did not have the chance to have the three hour lunch break they are used to.

I second that!!!

The Public Works Crews did a wonderful job of cleaning up following Tuesday's storm. Way to go everyone!
