EDITOR,

I could not determine which of two letters to the editor in a recent paper was more egregious, so I decided to comment on both.

The first order is to respond to the letter from Sonya Newlyn regarding the prayer at the Tracy City Council meetings (“Consider Constitution and the Bible,” Sept. 23 Tracy Press).

I cannot for the life of me figure out why she quoted Article VI and the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution to try and make her point, which neither one does. She then goes on to quote Snyder v. Murray City Corp., and would lead us to believe that saying a small prayer at the opening of a City Council meeting is “proselytizing.”

Do yourself a favor, madam. Don’t use words you do not know the meaning of. And the next time you decide to bash Christianity, try and steer clear of quotes from Jesus.

The second issue is the response from William Duckworth (“A senior citizen rant,” Sept. 23 Tracy Press) to a letter written by William Sutton.

Come on — can’t we give our seniors a bit of a break — they have earned the right to complain.

The fact of the matter is that President Obama is trying to cram his health care reform down our throats, as was evidenced this past weekend when the president appeared on every network news program — except Fox News, of course — to promote his health care plan. He even went so far as to appear on “The Late Show with David Letterman” to catch the late-night viewers.

I, for one, do not want to be told when someone else wants me to die.

Since Mr. Duckworth is stirring the Kool Aid, I suggest the seniors of our community drink a refreshing glass of iced tea — it’s full of antioxidants, which will help you live longer.
