This week’s Remember When “mystery photo” shows two young women in traditional Mexican garb in 1958. Who are they, what is the occasion and where are they standing?

The Sept. 2 Remember When “mystery photo” shows Dorothy Zanussi, who in 1982 became Tracy’s first woman mayor. The native of Oakland moved from Martinez to Tracy in 1963. She served on the city planning commission in 1974 and was appointed to the City Council in 1981 to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Fred Icardi. Elected to a four-year term in 1982, Zanussi was elected mayor for a one-year term by members of the council in 1982, becoming the first woman to hold that post. She continued on the council until 1990, serving as mayor again in 1985-86. She died July 12, 2004, at the age of 95.

Among those remembering Dorothy Zanussi as Tracy’s first woman mayor were Elaine Yager, Rene Fagundes, Ioda Corron, David Icardi, Richard Giambastini, Gussy Owen, Geri Madruga Jensen, Evelie Grebil, Harriet Norton, Bob Stephens, Laurie Rita and Lee Jorgensen.
