Pageants seem fairly routine for Madeline Freseman.

Trophies, photographs, tiaras and sashes form the main décor of the 12-year-old Tracy girl’s living room.

Just one picture seems a little out of place. It’s from last month, at the Tracy Dry Bean Festival pageant, when Madeline was crowned queen. While all the other pictures in the living room show her smiling and calm, Madeline looks shocked as a judge places the tiara on her head.

“After I heard that (I won), I got so excited, I couldn’t think straight,” said Madeline, who has been competing in pageants for four years.

Two years after reigning as the Bean Festival princess, Madeline will be the 2009 festival’s queen. As queen, Madeline will serve as an ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce, mingling with the public and attending community events.

“She’s the whole package, and she’s a spectacular performer,” pageant coordinator Juana Dement said. “She comes prepared.”

To earn the crown, Madeline sang a song — “Love on the Inside” — written and produced by Tracy resident Derek Clark. She said it was important for her to perform an original song, and this happened to be one she loved.

Singing, or performing just about anything, is something Madeline wants to continue to do in life. She said she first was inspired to sing after listening to Mariah Carey in the second grade. Madeline is also involved in the Tracy Community Choir and is always taking classes at the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts.

“I love being on stage and performing,” she said.

Her father, Rick Freseman, said her outgoing attitude and passion for the stage are a new thing. A few years ago, he said, she used to be quite shy.

Madeline said she’s excited to reign as Bean Queen, a position she looked up to when she was Bean Princess. This year’s princess, Brittany Cuevas, is a good friend of hers who lives about a block away.

“I can’t wait to be out in the community and on stage,” she said. “It is pretty familiar, but I’m glad to get to go through it again.”
