Tracy murder suspect Melissa Huckaby acted up and tried to hurt herself before her last court hearing, according to San Joaquin County jail records.

The 28-year-old accused of kidnapping, raping and killing 8-year-old neighbor girl Sandra Cantu is being held without bail at the San Joaquin County Jail. A grand jury handed down an indictment in August that also charges her with drugging a 7-year-old girl in January and a 37-year-old man in March. She pleaded not guilty last month to all the charges.

An incident report from the jail says that a couple days before her Aug. 17 court hearing, Huckaby hid behind a mattress and wrapped a blanket around her neck. She was taken to a “safety cell” and refused to eat dinner.

An Aug. 12 report says that a deputy found Huckaby lying on the floor by her bed. She said she felt dizzy and then passed out. The jail ordered a psychiatric nurse to check up on the inmate.

About a half-hour later, another jail employee found Huckaby sitting next to her bed with a trash can. When the employee asked her what was wrong, Huckaby replied, “I took pills,” according to the incident report. An ambulance took her to a doctor for treatment, records show.

Huckaby apparently acted up the morning of her last court appearance in an attempt to get out of going to the proceeding. She showed up in court with a couple fresh scratches on her forehead and on her left forearm.

Huckaby’s ex-husband accused her of trying to kill herself before. In a Southern California court when Johnny Huckaby was arguing for custody of their 5-year-old daughter, he said his ex-wife tried to kill herself by swallowing razor blades the day Sandra’s body was found April 6.

The Jacobson Elementary School second-grader went missing on March 27 and her body was found stuffed in a suitcase days later. The girl lived a few doors down from Huckaby in the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park.

More than 70 people testified before a secret grand jury that charged Huckaby with murder and three enhancements that could qualify her for the death penalty: kidnapping, lewd and lascivious acts on a child and rape by instrument. A separate count charges her with having sex with a child younger than 10.

Huckaby has yet to enter a plea, and is due in court on Sept. 10 in Stockton. A gag order bars anyone involved with the case from speaking publicly about it.

Prosecutor Thomas Testa said at the last hearing that the case is a death penalty case until otherwise indicated.

The only reason this bitch has any remorse is because she got caught!!! Bottom line. And it's not even remorse for what she did or what that little this baby went through. It's for herself. So Blah, Blah, Blah yourself tinfoil. Yes, it would be fantastic to learn more about what makes these perverts tick but how is that getting justice for this baby and her family. Your seriously telling me if this were your child you would simply accept just locking her up and studying her? Meanwhile you can never see, hold, kiss or have your child near you ever again. You must not be a parent! It may be less common for woman to do these things but they do them. We just don't here about them as often because it is considered Taboo for woman, who are the ones that should have a maternal instinct to have the ability to commit such acts against children. This woman is not crazy. It was simply greed and perversion that led this woman to do what she was doing to these little girls. She's no different than the sickos that are involved in human trafficking. I agree with Wkid. She's better off dead. You can study these people until your blue in the face but it won't erase the fact that they desire children. There is no rehabilitating them. It's proven over and over when they are made to get counseling and continue to molest children. The only answer is death or remove their privates and arms. Ha Ha Ha let's see them hurt someone then. Death for those that have killed. I have no sympathy for someone who can hurt another that cannot defend themselves. NONE!!

It would be best for everyone if she did kill herself. She does not have any way to do it there in jail with her.

You're right. I would not be allowed on the jury. Too intelligent. The prosecutor better hope there's no smart people on that jury. Intelligent jurors will demand to know more than "She was evil blah,blah,blah let's throw her in prison". What she did was so off the wall for a woman to do,it is to the betterment of society we learn why. Thru this we may be able to identify personality traits in others and stop such horrific crimes before they occure.

Nothing personal, but Tinfoil would likely be disqualified from a jury - "crazy" is not a legal term/issue (legal "insanity" is defined); the mental state of people has little to do with living in a mobile home park - usually it's a financial issue (Orchard Estates seems better than many); and decisions should be based on testimony and evidence instead of soundtracks.

WHY MH was living in the mobile home may be more significant. Her family gave conflicting reasons - one was to help her aging grandparents, and the other was as a last chance to help her straighten her life out (her mental state went lower after the divorce, the problem with stealing/getting busted for second offense/claiming incompetent to stand trial [which seems weird for a theft charge]/put on probation again/ordered to have mental counseling [reason not given, but someone obviously knew she had issues], etc.

I can guarantee both prosecution and defence that the trial will from the jury's eyes be a combination of songs from the 1972 music CD The Godfather. Specifically 'Connie's wedding' and 'The babtism'. I believ the trial will go nationwide then international in scope.

If I were on the jury what would I consider the criterion for being crazy? Well,she lived in a trailor park. That means she's halfway there already. The crime(s) she committed would be comprehensible were she a man. For a woman to do what she did fairly screams out something different happened here. This was not the usual pedophile man-lust rape and murder of a child. I'm not shedding tears for her but I'm telling the prosecution be very careful how you handle this.

CN: "Just how genuine is her insanity?" Legally, she's not insane (she knows she did something wrong because she tried to hide it). Compared to "normal" people, she's way over the edge. I don't think she's smart or cunning - she came up with some crazy things after the killing (the stolen suitcase, the letter she wrote/"found" by the mailbox, "internal bleeding" from swallowing blades [who the f--- would try suicide by swallowing blades - Drano maybe]. I still wonder if she's competent to stand trial - here are some notes:

A defensible CST evaluation should address the following issues using direct quotations from the defendant whenever possible:

1. The defendant’s ability to understand the charges, including:

• the legal and practical meaning of these charges;

• the implications of his/her current legal situation;

• the roles and functions of the courtroom personnel; and

• the ability to differentiate between various pleas and verdicts.

2. The defendant’s ability to assist in

his/her defense, which includes:

• describing his/her behavior and whereabouts at the time of the alleged crime(s);

• effectively interacting with defense counsel; and

• behaving in an appropriate manner in the courtroom.

MH claimed she was incompetent to stand trial after a theft incident - she was deemed CST and told to get counseling - this is more serious and MH is probably more wigged out now than then. Will see what happens...

It's said that women try suicide more than men, but men are more successful (eg swallowing razor blades/putting blanket over head, vs firing a gun in mouth) - says it's because women are crying for help/attention and men really want life over with. Huckaby should have used the Exacto knife blades to slit her wrists, but should have done it before harming innocent people. 70 people testifying is a lot - much will come out at trial. MH had problems going way back (earliest I read about was suicidal thoughts at age 12), but there was never anything in the news about her getting professional help. Seems something tweeked her at an early age - it's no excuse for what happened, but someone should have gotten her help when she needed it.

Concerned I was asking myself the same thing, is she really insane or is she trying to get out of the horrible things she did?

Although I don't think its a cry for attention but yet a desperate attempt to not deal with the reality of the horrible things she did.

Those poor people she hurt, lets hope that justice is served and she doesn't take the families closure by killing herself first.

She knew how this would play out. She is not stupid. Cunning planning, again.

Just how genuine is her insanity?

Just look the other way next time, maybe she'll get tired of seeking attention.

She needs to be in psychiatric ward, in total isolation, in padded cell, with bread and water. Period.

Sorry, dark side of Amy speaking again!

Her sins may be so great that it is too ugly for her to revist in her mind day after day? Tough, she brought it on herself to be tormented by her acts!

No sympathy for MH, my sympathy goes to Sandra Cantu's family. News, don't you dare try to gain public's sympathy for MH.

I will gladly donate a few dozen razor blades to Huckaby if she wants to finish herself off.

This is going to end with a successful insanity defense and incarceration in Atascadero for many years. She may never be released because it'll become political same as the Manson girls.

If she was really trying to commit suicide, I don't think she would tell the jail employee, I took pills.

If the attempt was real, one would think you would just lay in bed waiting for the desired results, and not tell someone what you just did.

Guards at CJ: please, oh please, turn your back on her for just a second during one of these suicide attempts. Oh wait, she won't ACTUALLY commit suicide, she just fakes it.

I'd sure love to slip her a .38 handgun somehow, so she could really find a permanent solution to her problem. But there's no way to be sure she wouldn't use it on someone else...
