Tracy’s girls golf team has changed since last year, when a group of seniors who have since graduated were the team’s top scorers. But a win in the team’s first matchup of the season proved encouraging for the girls who will make up the core of this year’s team.

Tracy took a 275-324 win over Riverbank in the first match of the season at Tracy Golf & Country Club, with four more pre-league matches scheduled before the Sept. 15 match against Franklin to start the San Joaquin Athletic Association season.

Next week’s contests include a matchup against West High on Thursday at Tracy Golf & Country Club.

Tracy High senior Taylor Slabaugh, now in her third year as a Bulldogs golfer, led her team with a score of 50 on the par-36 course. She said that’s not too bad for the first time out this year, but she hopes to start cutting strokes from her score next time out.

“My short game was OK, but on my long game I struggled the most today,” she said. “I’d like to shoot around 47. By the end of the year, I’d like to shoot in the low 40s. I’m pretty much starting where I ended last year.”

Other scores for Tracy included Jennifer Kim, 51; Emily Dellagana, 53; Ana Jackson, 60; Devin Nicholson, 61; and Shelby Devlin, 63.

Slabaugh and junior Nicholson regularly contributed to last year’s team scores.

Coach Derek Solano added that Kim, a freshman, is also going to contribute to low team scores this year. He added that Dellagana, a sophomore, has improved since last year when she was on the team but usually did not finish in the low five.

“She did what she needed to do: She kept playing during the summer and is now a producing member of our team, and hopefully that goes on all year long,” Solano said.

In all, the team has 10 golfers, with the top six representing the team in matches, and the low five scores from each match counting toward the team total.

West High’s golf team also started its season Thursday with a match against Patterson High at Diablo Grande in Patterson. West had only four girls at the match, just short of the five needed for a team, and only two completed nine holes to log a score for the day.

Senior Belinda Mahan and junior Alice Trisri, both returning from last year, each shot 44 on the par-36 course.
