Cougars take 5th at tournament

The California Cougars under-19 soccer team finished fifth at the West Coast Futbol Club Classic soccer tournament this past weekend in San Juan Capistrano.

The Cougars opened preliminary play with a 3-0 win over San Diego Spirit.

Tracy’s Alexis Poppoff provided one assist, as teammates Lacey Vaughan scored two goals and Marena O’Leary added one.

Goalie Brianna Murawski of Tracy posted the shutout behind a strong defense that included Alyssa Strope and Melissa Worthington of Tracy.

In their next game, the Cougars tied the Claremont Stars, 1-1, on a Poppoff goal.

In their final preliminary game, the Cougars tied the Slammers FC G91 North, 0-0. Murawski posted her second shutout of the weekend.

On Aug. 8 and 9, the Cougars made it to the quarterfinals in the Mustang Stampede Tournament in Danville. The Cougars opened with a 0-0 tie against State Cup finalist Juventus Destiny.

In their second game, the Cougars fell to the Mustang Spirit, 2-1, as the Spirit broke a 1-1 tie in the final minutes of the game. The Cougars’ lone goal came from O’Leary, with an assist from Poppoff.

The Cougars then beat the California Stars, 2-0, on goals from Sydnee Koscielecki and Sara Pimentel, as keeper Murawski posted her second shutout of the tournament.

In the quarterfinal game, the Cougars fell to a strong Lamorinda United team, 5-2. Megan Mata scored both Cougar goals, one on an assist by Poppoff.
