News reports say a criminal grand jury convened today to hear evidence in a case against Melissa Huckaby, the Tracy woman police say kidnapped, raped and killer her daughter’s 8-year-old playmate.

San Joaquin County Superior Court officials declined to confirm what was reported in The Record because of the secrecy of the hearing. A gag order bars anyone involved in the case from publicly discussing it.

Huckaby’s preliminary hearing was scheduled for late September, but a grand jury proceeding cancels the need for that. The Record reported that the proceeding this week will last about two weeks.

The 28-year-old stands accused of killing Sandra Cantu, who lived down the street from Huckaby in Tracy’s Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park. Sandra’s body was found in a black suitcase about two miles north of town 10 days after she went missing on March 27. Police arrested Huckaby on April 10 after a five-hour interrogation on charges of murder with three special circumstances — rape by instrument, kidnapping and lewd and lascivious acts on a child. Prosecutors later added charges that she also furnished a harmful substance to a 36-year-old man and a 7-year-old girl.

Huckaby pleaded not guilty to all charges. She remains behind bars at the San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp.

I completely agree with you 5silvas. My daughter who is 6 is always speaking about her as well and I too hope that they can somehow find peace. I hope MH suffers for the rest of her life! Sandra her mother and family are in our hearts forever as well. RIP Sandra Cantu.

You know, I just hope that somehow Sandra's family, her mother especially, is alright through all of the hearings that are going to take place. I'm not sure how it works , but I just hope that she doesn't have to see anything (photos) or hear anything that is just too unbearable (what can be worse than this whole ordeal, i know).

I think about Sandra everyday, and my kids talk about her constantly. Her and her family will always be in our hearts and our thoughts.

Hopefully justice will be served and we can all try to heal.
