Maile Alofa Laban of Tracy and Ruben Martinez of Phoenix will walk down the aisle Aug. 29, 2009, at Spring Creek Golf & Country Club in Ripon.

With the blessings of Maile’s mother and stepfather, Ruben proposed Oct. 12, 2008, at the graveside of Maile’s father in Hayward. The couple later surprised their families with the engagement announcement at Maile’s birthday celebration on Oct. 19.

Maile is a service director and administrative assistant at Kaiser Permanente in Modesto. She is the daughter of the late Peter D. Laban and Lisa B. Laban-Frymyer, and is the stepdaughter of Bill Frymyer of Tracy. Her siblings are Nikki and Brandon Moore, Brianna Frymyer and Michael Frymyer, all of Tracy.

Ruben Martinez is supervisor of security services at Doctors Medical Center of Modesto. His parents are Ruben Sr. and Lucy Martinez, and his siblings are Daniel Martinez and Angela Martinez, all of Modesto.

The couple met in Modesto at a company softball tournament, where Ruben was a spectator in the stands. He noticed Maile stealing bases on the field, and by the end of the day, Ruben said, she stole his heart as well. The couple will live in Salida.
