West High alumna graduates boot camp

Pfc. Melanie F. Batiste, 19, of Tracy, graduated June 5 from United States Marine Corps boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. Batiste successfully completed 13 weeks of intensive basic training at Parris Island as one of 42 recruits in Training Platoon 4017, Papa Company 4th Recruit Training Battalion.

While in basic training, Batiste received a meritorious promotion to Private 1st Class.

Following 10 days home leave, she will report to Camp LeJeune for one month at Military Combat Training and then will head to Military Occupation Specialty School. Melanie is a 2008 graduate of West High School and the daughter of Tracy residents Michael and Alesia Batiste.

Tracy High grad gets through boot camp

Pvt. Magda T. Sandoval, 23, of Tracy, graduated June 5 from United States Marine Corps boot camp at MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina. Sandoval successfully completed 13 weeks of intensive basic training as one of 40 recruits in Training Platoon 4017, Papa Company 4th Recruit Training Battalion.

Following 10 days home leave, she will report to Camp Geiger, North Carolina, for one month of Marine Combat Training and then will head to Military Occupation Specialty School.

Sandoval is a 2004 graduate of Tracy High School and the daughter of Tracy residents John and Penny Sandoval. Sandoval’s brother, Johnny, recently graduated from Marine Corps boot camp in San Diego and is training at Camp Pendleton, San Diego.

Tracy resident walks with honors

Tia Shelley, a 2005 West High alumna, graduated with honors June 5 from California State University, Stanislaus, earning a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a minor in physics. She will attend the University of Illinois, Chicago, for her master’s and doctorate in computer science.

Her parents are Ward and Becky Shelley of Tracy.

West grad charges ahead

Daniel B. Corbett from the West High class of 2005 obtained his bachelor’s degree in business management and economics June 13 from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Danny will return to the San Diego Chargers for his second summer internship while preparing for the certified public accountant exam.

Tracy students earn scholarships

New United Motor Manufactur-ing Inc. in Fremont awarded scholarships to four local students: Lindsee Evans from Tracy High, Amber Fuentes from Millennium High and Bayan Abu Sneineh from West High.

NUMMI established the scholarship program in 1995 to assist team members’ children who plan to pursue education in college or vocational programs. Applicants are chosen based on grades, sports, extracurricular activities, work experience and community involvement.

Ziller makes the list

Tracy resident Brenda S. Ziller, a senior at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., was among the 942 undergraduate students named to the college’s President’s List for spring semester 2009. Students must earn a 3.7 or better grade-point average to be listed.

Tracy student on leadership fast-track

Destiny Alvarez from Tracy graduated on June 13 from the Great Valley Center’s Institute for the Development of Emerging Area Leaders. Alvarez was selected to participate in this program because of her already significant impact on the community and her potential to further develop as a regional leader in improving the well-being of the Central Valley.

Future UC students earn scholarships

The Tracy Republican Women’s Club gave a $2,000 scholarship to both Tracy High grad Paige Sheckla and West High alumna Kristy Fojo. Fojo will go to the University of California, Davis, in the fall and Sheckla will attend the University of California, Los Angeles.
