The family of 8-year-old murder victim Sandra Cantu will join city officials at a Tracy park on Wednesday to plant a tree in the girl’s memory.

Sandra’s favorite color was pink, so Tracy police Officer Irene Rose thought it fitting to make the memorial tree a pink crepe myrtle.

City workers will plant the seedling at Kenner Park , which lies right next to the school Sandra attended — Jacobsen Elementary School — before she was kidnapped, raped and killed on March 27.

At the base of the tree will rest a brass plaque engraved with Sandra’s birth and death dates and the inscription “In remembrance of Sandra Cantu.”

Sen. Barbara Boxer donated the 2-foot-tall tree and some money to help care for it for a couple years, according to the city. Tracy sign company Sign-a-Rama donated the plaque.

Crepe myrtles get to be about 15 to 20 feet tall, said city superintendent of parks Don Scholl. Once it takes root, he said it should last for decades.

The family wants Wednesdays’ dedication to stay low-key, said Rose. A representative from Boxer’s office should show up, as should several city park commissioners, police and other local officials.

“The family, they wanted to keep it a local service,” Rose said. “They wanted a quiet memorial, but anyone from the public is welcome to come.”

Rose said she talks to the family every day, and said they’re holding up OK, but still struggling to cope with the loss.

“I think reality is now starting to set in more,” Rose said. “But the community has been very supportive.”

A Southern California family in May donated a playhouse in Sandra’s memory. The city, police and other members of the public gathered at Jacobson Elementary late last month to see the school install the pink-and-white house.

Also, a company called Landscape Structures, Inc., recently donated a $46,500 playground to the school. The company’s subcontractor, Ross Recreation, put up $4,000 to cover the cost of shipping and delivering the playground, according to the city. Construction is scheduled to start this summer.

Meanwhile, donations have continued to pour in for Sandra’s family, Rose said. To date, Tracy Crimestoppers has received nearly $40,000 in donations. Just this week, a local car club sent in some money for Sandra’s family raised from a recent memorial car show.

“People still want to help,” Rose said. “It’s very touching.”

YOU know it would be ok if donation were just for sandras sake but when a parent has a taste for money from a tragic incident like our sandra .It becomes a expect of funds rather than thanks , maria already which i know for a fact has demanded money from one fund raiser and asked for recipts from another and said she has legal right for the funds to come to her .That is dishonorable to sandra.Maria is becoming greedy, and i know this for a fact. When ever something is given she wants the face value of the item and half of it in cash.Only a few of us know how the chavezs are. And a shame they are doing it to our sandra and her memory.Bashing no telling u the facts YES

Tracy girl: This story was about a tree for a murdered 8 year old girl who left behind a family that will struggle for ever with their heartache until the day they die. People like you coming on this board and bashing about things they know nothing about, or should even care about for that matter, is disgusting. Who cares if the family gets money? Whose business is it?? God forbid you, who are so uncaring, should ever be in Sandra's family's shoes...Shame on you

I hope there is good turnout today, I think the gesture is BEAUTIFUL in keeping Sandra Cantu's memory alive. She represented children whose voice were silenced. She may be gone, but certainly not forgotten, even to outsiders, like me.

God Bless Tracy and Sandra Cantu.

Your in a mood.

No, there was no memorial fund in Sandra's name from the shelter, I just voluntarily put on the check in memory of her when I sent them the money. When I lived in the Midwest when a family member died all the neighbors brought over a casserole or some form of food as way of saying were sorry for your loss.

Look we're not going to agree on where the money goes, I understand your point, but if that's what the person giving the money wants to do, that's their choice. But I hope you and all of us can agree that the tree being planted in her honor today lives as long as a redwood.

TracyGirl,

Seriously, what do you have against Sandra’s family to be bashing on them? Are you mad because people aren’t donating money to you? It is donated money from people who want to give them money….you ask what Crime stoppers are going to do with donated money? Just because Sandra’s killer was caught doesn’t mean that they won’t put the money to use to help other victims. You keep claiming abuse by Maria, where do you get your information from?….because she might be on welfare as you claim (which has no relevance) doesn’t mean she’s abusive….you should really just keep your bad mouthing to yourself….nobody wants to hear you. God Bless Maria Chavez and all of Sandra Cantu’s family.

Did you think about giving the 25bucks to the Chavez family maybe they can feed their dogs with that.? I didnt know the animal shelter had a memory fund for Sandra Cantu. mmm I missed that, how do you know there is a memory fund for sandra Cantu? where did you get your information from? MMMm im ignorant. I dont understand how that information didnt cirucalate or at least get to me. Everything the family is doing has gotten around town quickly, just like they are saving money to buy a house that not even the working class can afford at this time. WOW. I am stupid I guess, do you agree?

If every penny goes to Sandra's family, that's fine with me. It's the choice of the person giving the money.

No one is being forced to give the family anything. It's all voluntary, just like any charity or if a homeless person begs you for money. You have the right to say no.

Personally I gave $25 to the Tracy Animal Shelter in Sandra's name.

WOOOOH TRACYGIRL. Crimestopper money is used to catch criminals. Usually paid to other criminals who snitch. Thats life. Imagine if that woman drugged you. killed you. Wouldn't you want people to find the killer?

As for KYLE he will get all the FREE medical help & counceling from the county. There is a fund for victims of violent crimes/ It is seperate from Crimestopper money, Crimestoppers gets money from DONATIONS Not so much from tax payers. GET the truth before going on a verbal rampage. Good luck, relax & go create something useful, maybe you raise money/ for KYLE maybe find his clothing size & ask for donations.

People will help him, just ask

Its zitizens money.. why is this family entitled to reap the benefit of the death of their daughter. there are people dying of hunger and thirst due to the economy. The Tracy Press saids that its going to crime stoppers but for its going to the family as the papers says. What entitles this family to be comfortable with free money. Money does not replace Sandra but how can one be comforted with money. ABUSE ABUSE ABUSE hopeful the mother or the daughter dont smoke or snort with it or perhaps pay back unpaid child support. If somebody is on welfare is this fraud? Can some of this money go to Kyle. He is the victim of hunger, starvation, wreaking physical abuse,, burned all over his back, tauting emotional abuse by his perpetrators. Its mind boggling to see read and hear the words that Kyle has shared with the world. He is a survivor who needs lots of help. OUCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.. Its just not fair that one family gets it all, kyle has needs to

TracyGirl,

Why do you care that that family is getting money donated to them? They just lost a child in the worst way possible. Have a heart why dont you. Nothing will ever replace Sandra, but the money will at least help the family become a little more comfortable and not have to stress about money. What is it any of your business or right to get mad at that????????

I agree with doors17. Every time I am reminded of this tragedy I want to scream and cry "why" like I did when I first heard about it. Innocence lost, taken for no reason other than pure evil. God bless you Sandra you were truly special in your tragically short life...

With all the evil that has always existed, it's good to know that the good will always outnumber them, and know we can always count on each other in times of need. No matter your politics, religion, color of skin, or whatever ridiculous reason that separates us, here in Tracy we have learned from this tragedy that as a community we can all become one.

Here's hoping the tree lives long after all of us are gone, and that future Tracy residents will know that Sandra's memory will never die.

Emotionally shattering, this thing. One lacks proper, descriptive wordages. There is only from outside observers SUCH a rage as to set the heavens afire.
