The Tracy delegation will leave July 8 for the weeklong visit to Tracy’s sister city of Memuro, said Bob Elliott, president of the Tracy Sister Association.
Originally, the group was to visit Japan in May, but Memuro officials feared that the swine flu might have been carried to Japan, which led to the trip being canceled.
“Since then, swine flu has reached several pockets in Japan, and the efforts there are now to contain the spread of the virus and not to try to keep it from reaching Japan,” Elliott said.
All 10 students who originally planned to visit Japan in May will be able to make the trip from July 8 to 16, he said. However, Elliott will be the lone Tracy chaperone on the trip — two others who had originally planned to take part could not reschedule.
During the Tracy group’s time in Memuro, located on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido, Elliott, who speaks Japanese, will present a plaque commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Tracy Sister City program.
“On the last day of our visit, we also will take part in the celebration of the 110th anniversary of the founding of Memuro,” Elliott said.
