Students in Michele Compton’s fourth- and fifth-grade special education class at Central Elementary School sorted through boxes of recyclables this week, their last before school lets out for the summer.

The school received a check for $1,000 from the class for recycling materials donated from Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area as part of an ongoing program.

The off-road park adopted the school five years ago and has donated its collected materials to the school for recycling. The plastic and cans are collected, and the recycling money will buy tapes and CDs for the English Language Learners program and books for the school library.

The school plans expand its recycling efforts next year and collect items from cardboard to batteries.
