EDITOR,

If Melissa Huckaby is found guilty of killing Sandra Cantu, she shouldn’t get life in prison. That would be too easy of a sentence. If she’s guilty, the case wouldn’t be closed until she dies.

I don’t know what it is like to lose a child, but it’s something her family will never get over. I don’t know Sandra, but I hope and pray she is in heaven.

gooddaymate, I see what you are saying. But why give her what she wants? Let her rot in a jail cell with plenty of time to think about what she has done.

It used to be that I did not believe in the death penalty, because I thought it devalued life. Then, after hearing of some horrific recent crimes, I realized that it devalues life when we do not have a strong enough reaction to such crimes. I think that if Melissa Huckaby is guilty of this crime, that the death penalty would show that we respect the life of Sandra Cantu. However, a trial is a year or two away, and when it happens, it is the jury that will decide.

I can tell you one thing-- if I committed such a crime, I would WANT to die. Melissa Huckaby reportedly tried to kill herself with razor blades. If she wants to die, there should also be a legal way to let her do that quickly and soon.
