As the NCAA National Letter of Intent signing period comes to a close for 2014, two more Tracy athletes have announced their commitment to play in their sports at the college level.
Tracy High School, Modesto Junior College
Minot State University, Minot, N.D.
Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, NCAA Division II
Kellie Piazza was invited to continue playing soccer this coming year with the Minot State University Beavers in North Dakota after that team’s coaches learned of her reputation for winning.
Piazza helped Tracy win San Joaquin Athletic Association championships as a varsity midfielder in 2012 and 2013 and also contributed to the Bulldog junior varsity team’s seven-year championship streak.
She started playing soccer at age 6 and joined her first competitive team when she was 8. Last year, she played for the Modesto Junior College women’s team, which went 10-7-4 in 2013. Piazza scored the winning goals in two of those games.
“Kellie is a big, strong center midfielder who is also very strong technically,” Minot State head coach Jason Spain said in a statement released July 17. “She will be a huge help in the mid for the Beavers.”
West High School, Ohlone College
San Francisco State University
California Collegiate Athletic Association, NCAA Division II
West High graduate Jacob Lopez, Class of 2011, is getting his opportunity to move forward in baseball at San Francisco State University.
“San Francisco State is the best-quality college that started talking to me,” Lopez said.
He plans to join the starting lineup as an outfielder and in the middle of the batting lineup.
He played a similar role at Ohlone College, where he red-shirted his freshman year and played for the past two years. Lopez said that intense conditioning starting in his freshman year made him a better player, and he saw the same intensity in the San Francisco State team.
“They just played hard all the time. Everyone seemed like they want to win.”
He will attend on a partial athletic scholarship and study business management.
