Erica De Leon Sanchez keeps moving forward in the dance world, and her latest accomplishments put her on the path for further success.
Erica, 14, just returned from the Dupree Dance Convention 2014 Shades of Summer event, held Friday through Sunday at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Chicago, Ill., where she was selected as one of the top four in the 150 dancers in her 12-to-14 age group.
“It was so much fun,” she said. “It was kind of scary, in the best way possible. We had to audition to get scholarships. Auditions are always scary.”
Erica attended the Shades of Summer event after she earned a scholarship with her performance in February at Dupree Dance’s audition in San Francisco.
Her performances in contemporary dance this past weekend impressed choreographers enough that Dupree Dance awarded her a scholarship to pay for registration fees for the 2015 convention in Chicago.
“It definitely boosted my confidence and I can pursue greater things now,” Erica said.
Erica is an incoming freshman at Tracy High with plans to join the Bulldog dance team. She took up dance three years ago and trains with Hailey and Kaela Angelo, formerly of The Company Fine Arts Academy of Tracy and now the directors of Studio One Dance Center.
Hailey Angelo said the studio has 40 members. They train at World Gym on East Street, with a new studio to open on Larch Road next month.
