Jose Maria Zapien Sr., 76, a former Tracy resident and retired construction worker, died Monday at his home in Modesto. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, July 18, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 163 W. Eaton Ave. Burial will follow in Tracy Cemetery 501 E. Schulte Road. Visitation will be observed from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 17, followed immediately by a rosary, at Hotchkiss Mortuary, 5 W. Highland Ave.

Milton Miller Birkhahn, 87, of Stockton, a Tracy High School graduate and longtime Durham Ferry Road resident, died July 10 after a short illness. He had worked on several Vernalis farms and at Pacific Coast Aggregate. Services will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, July 18, at Cherokee Memorial Park, 831 Industrial Way, in Lodi. The family prefers memorial contributions to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Saundra Kaye Offill, 67, a resident at Astoria Gardens care center the past three years, died July 10. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease seven years ago. A celebration of her life will begin at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, at Fry Memorial Chapel, 550 S. Central Ave. Graveside services are planned Friday, July 18, at Indianola Cemetery in Indianola, Okla. A guest book can be signed at

Geralee Houck Brintnall, 84, of Tracy, died of heart failure July 9 at a Folsom hospital. The family will have a private memorial service. Contributions in Ms. Brintnall’s name may be sent to the American Heart Association (, P.O. Box 742030, Los Angeles, CA 90074-2030.
