The Mountain House Wolverines 12-and-under boys basketball team won another tournament title — the team’s ninth first-place finish in 13 tournaments — after a 5-1 run through the Gold division at the Coca Cola National Tournament, Friday through Sunday in Garden Grove.
The Wolverines lost their first game in pool play to Arizona Legacy 48-47, followed by two wins in pool play and two wins in bracket play, including a 36-30 victory over the Rancho Cucamonga Bulls in the semifinals and a 59-41 win against Junior Hoops of Orange County.
Wolverines founder and director Reno Ursal said the tournament win was a major accomplishment for the team, as it qualified the Wolverines to compete at the Nor Cal Power 10 Invitational, June 28 and 29, in Rocklin.
He said the team was going into its third year under coach Tavio Meeks, and the boys also played together in younger age divisions.
“From where they started to where they are now, it’s night and day,” Ursal said. “They play team-oriented ball. They don’t care who scores. They all look for the highest percentage shot.”
The 12-and-under boys also recently won the Jam On It tournament in Reno over Memorial Day weekend with a 4-0 record. The team was one of seven Wolverines boys and girls teams competing at the event.
“Across the organization, we challenge all of the teams to not take the cupcake tournaments, but go to the ones where they have to earn their trophies,” Ursal said. “It’s all heavyweight teams at these.”
